main differences between series
I asked this question awhile back in the EG forum, just to learn and got flamed- hard. I don't need to figure out which one is best for me, or which is better for what, this isn't about that. I just want to know what are the main mechanical differences between the B's and H's, other than the obvious like bore/stroke/cams... This is an engine theory question. I have no intention of putting an H in my Sol. I'm just curious why we have a B16A and a H22A4 and not a H16A4 or a B22A (old-skool Preludes excluded).
B series were designed for lighter civics. For bigger cars like accords and preludes they needed a larger motor like the H's and F's.Not really sure why they went with the b20 in the crv and not a H.Honda makes decisions based on engineering requirements as well as money.Hope this helps

Are the block castings much different? I was under the impression that the H blocks were beefier (proportionally speaking).

The CRV is based on the Civic.

If it was that obvious why did you ask?

What I want to know is the main reasons why there are different series. There has to be some mechanical differences I'd think to put them in different engine families. I know that the obvious stuff (displacement, cam specs, and such are different) but does one spin a different way? Is one made of a different material? Is one have a few distinct differences internally? That sort of thing.
The B's and H's are very similar designs although not interchangeable. They rotate in the same direction, and have similar camshaft, rocker and timing belt layouts. They use the same materials for blocks heads and cranks. They both have cast pistons and forged cranks and rods. The B's have cast iron cylinder sleeves but the H's have a composite liner that isn't compatible with forged pitons. The H's use a cable to shift the tranny and the B's use rods.
