lsvtec pinging
i have a built lsvtec with some type-r pistons and at around 3000 to 4000 rpms im getting a little pinging noise i thought my header was just rattling but a buddy of mine told me it was my engine not getting enough gas and was causing the pinging so we retarded my time via turning the distributor it helped alot but its still does it a little and he told me to get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to bump up my fuel, before i burn a hole in a piston, but my question is this does this happen alot, will this fix the issue and is there anything else i could instead that is better
For a second I thought this was an ancient post from 2001, not 2010.
We have cheap EMS's availible for the stock obd1 ECUs now. Use them. That's the only "better" fix, get it tuned properly. People stopped using the distributor as a band-aid many years ago. Even a stock ITR ECU can have issues with this detonation if your motor is built too far beyond stock.
Anyways, you're hearing detonation. You don't have enough octane for your compression and ignition timing. Adding fuel won't help much at all, unless it was very lean. A tunable EMS will allow you to add fuel and retard timing at specific rpm & vacuum points to tune out this detonation.
