Default Ls / Vtec timing - pistons -

Alright guys here is the deal. I have 8000 miles into my ls/vtec and have never noticed that my timing was retarded all the way! When I set it to stock(the middle) with out the proper procedure of using a timing gun I start to detonate. So I set it back. Any suggestions cause I have never had to adjust timing before. Also are gsr turbo pistons compatiable with a B18B? I'm looking to get CP pistons but they only have them avail of the shelf in either 9.0:1 or 10.5:1....thats way too high. I was looking for 9.5:1 and the gsr's ring in at 9.8:1 for the CP's. Any help would be great.

using a quality timing gun is the way to go with adjusting the ignition timing.
also make sure that the inside "service connector" is jumped with a paper clip and the engine is idling around 700 rpm. 16 degrees BTDC is the stock setting, but you have to take into consideration a chipped ECU (with possible ignition timing advace), the C/R of the motor and the cam timing settings (if you're using adjustable cam gears not at 0/0).

if you're running 0/0 cam timing, moderate C/R (11-12:1), a stock ECU program and 91-94 octane, you might only need 1 or 2 degrees of ignition retard. but every setup varies a bit.

for calculating C/R's when using different pistons, go to c-speedracing.com.
there you can calculate the C/R change when swapping pistons from one motor to another and when using aftermarket domed/dished pistons etc. if you know the dome CC of the piston then you can figure things out.
