Default ls/vtec problems

can anyone help me troubleshoot this?
ok, a friend of mine dropped a couple valves on his ls/vtec. took head to machine shop and installed new valves, guides, springs. put head back on ls block, hooked everything back up and started her up. tested it around the block. it runs, but when it is under full throttle, the motor seems like it is choking and the a/f gauge goes lean. also, the vtec goes on, but it feels really weak. only noise. NO CEL's .
i raised the fuel pressure, same problem. changed fuel filter, same. cleaned injectors, same. tried new distributor & coil, same. dropped oil pan, there was a small dent, so we pounded it out, put it back on, same. we were thinking of maybe upgrading the fuel pump (this is in a crx and he is using the stock one), but the thing is that it used to run fine before. i was hoping that maybe someone here can give me some ideas on what to check next before we end up dishing out some cash . thanks.
