LS transmission REBUILD!
Hello everyone. I drive a 1992 Honda Civic Hatchback VX with a USDM B20z motor swap.
Currently I am running an LS transmission but ever since I got the swap its been grinding 3rd gear.
Now I have decided to rebuild the transmission myself and not worry about dishing out the money for another one.
Here are my questions and once they get answered I shall get started on it:
1- If my third gear grinds, does that mean that I need to change out the 2nd and 3rd gear syncros?
2- If my second gear grinds, does that mean that I need to change out the 1st and 2nd gear syncros?
3- What special tools will be needed in order to complete this task?
4- Where can I find these syncros at and how much will it run about? (Honda/Acura dealership?)
5- Is there anything else in specific that I will need to put the transmission back together?
6- Is this worth it?
Please help me on this guys. I envy the experts on this board. I did a search but didn't come up with anything. That is the only reason why I am posting this. If you happen to find one please let me know.
Thanks for your consideration, James

you may be able to score the parts here. http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org
I poked around and didnt see a rebuild kit but I think there is one.
imo If you are going to take the tranny apart replace ALL of the syncros.
Oh yeah you may want to have a helms manual handy. Pm me if you want a link to dl the 94-01 teg manual.

1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 5th and reverse all share a synchro sleeve between them. If you've got a grind in third, there is a problem in the 3-4 sleeve set. Grind in 2nd, problem with the 1-2 sleeve set.
The synchro ring itself is not the likely cause of your grind(s), rather the sleeve and gear are worn and need to be replaced. You can purchase the parts from Honda, but they will probably add up quickly. If you need to replace multiple gear sets, you're probably better off buying a new transmission (especially since it's an LS, and going to be the cheapest/easiest to find).
If you do decide to tear into it, you will need a reverse snap ring pliers (the craftsman reversible worked well for me), some feeler gauges, measuring caliper, honda-bond (or RTV Grey), 32mm socket for the countershaft nut, as well as a torque wrench and the normal assortment of sockets etc., a clean, well-lit work area (don't laugh - there are a lot of parts to keep track of), and a large bench vise.
If the bearings are shot, you will also need access to bearing pullers (slide-hammer and jaw-type) and bearing/seal installers. Come to think of it, you'll probably need a gear/bearing puller to get the countershaft apart anyway. The tools alone could cost enough to justify a new transmission...
** Above all, you WILL NEED the Helm manual! ** Get it first, read it, and then decide if you want to tackle the job.
