Default low irratic idle

Just recently my tach has been acting up. My car is a 93 civic ex 1.6 vtec. The car is running but the tach will not read until I give it just a little gas to bring the rpm's up the needle will sit on the stopper. So while the car is sitting at idle my tach reads zero. The car has been idling really low. I have no codes either. I have read other similiar threads that say replacing the coil solved there problem but I want to double check to make sure. I'm not one to just throw $ at a problem till it is fixed. Is there a way to check the coil with the voltmeter? If so is there a link to go too to read on how to do it and what the readings should be. Thanks in advance.
