Default Lost Motion Devices?

Does anyone know alot about these?

I've had a ticking going on in my car that kinda sounds like popcorn seeds in a metal can or something. It happens when the car starts up and continues to do that until it warms up, then it goes away. I was told it might be injectors, so I put some high quality cleaning **** thru the system with no results.

The owner of the local shop said he thought it might be the lost motion devices, but he doesn't know exactly what to do to fix the problem. I remember reading in some magazine how they were rebuilding a motor and said if the lost motion devices were bad, to replace em.

Anyone ever had this problem, or can help me diagnose? Standing over the running motor and hitting the throttle, I can't tell whether the noise is coming from the injectors or the valvetrain.

Thanks in advance,
-Chris

just wondering, does your distributor sound like its making any noise? If so it might be a loose timing belt.
Whens the last time the valves were adjusted? What were they set to?
Should be .007" on the intake and .008" on the exhaust.
I have never heard the lost motion assemblies make any noise, but I guess it would be possible if you had something wrong with one of them... the LS motors had a noise like you describe, but that was due to the sockets for the adjuster screw on the rocker... it would wear and cause a groove that the ball on the adjuster would rub accross and make a tapping sound, but a VTEC motor does not have these.

Take about a foot of garden hose, hold it up to your ear. That should let you pinpoint the location of the sound.

If it's coming from the valve cover it could be valves or LMAs. Take off the valve cover, adjust your valves properly. If you find they're already correct, that kinda narrows it down to LMAs.

Timing belt is brand new and tensioned fine. I just got a valve adjustment because I figured that was the problem when I first noticed this, but it did not fix.

I'll try the stehoscope thing, and if its for sure coming from my valvetrain I guess I'll talk to the guy at the shop about replacing the lmd's. Thanks.
