Default Lost motion device

I was wonder if for higher revving do you need itr lost motion devices...
what impact do lost motion devices have on rev limits, maximal rpms? How do you identify itr vs non itr lost motion devices if they're needed?

First and foremost, think of the LMA as shocks for your valvetrain. the springs do only so much, but the lost motion is what keeps them from bottoming out. think of it like pushing in a piano key, the lost motion device would be what returns the hammer back and returns the key. as far as needing them, well you could run the risk of bottoming them out with ghetto cam settings and even R cams. Chances are if you have stock installed heights, you will be ok for a while. Anything larger than ITR cams and you dont have the extra "degree" of travel at the valve which is critical at that measurement, you can begin to erode the effectiveness of these devices, especially combined with high lift/duration and elevated RPM. ITR LMAs also have more dampening/rebound pressure to them when compared to B16/18C1 units.

I dont know about you, I purchased a set. I have R LMAs and R valvesprings in my GSR head awaiting moderate cams they run about 28-35each and you need 8. R intake valvesprings are 150 inner and outer. Move the B16/B18C1 intakes to the exhaust side and you have true R upper valvetrain for $400. Skunk2 stage 1, TODA As, CTR/ITRs and cams of the like will be fine on this to about 8600rpm. I wouldnt rev higher unless I had something like a TODA springs/PE belt and ITR intake valves. Ti retainers are a waste, dont worry about them. Leave em stock to 9200. Jack at P1auto ran a strong setup he tells me with stock retainers on TODA Cs and Valvesprings to 9200rpm.

No one said re-engineering honda cars was cheap. All in all, you will have an extra bit of clearance at critical operating conditions than you previously would with stock units, therefore having an extra degree of saftey that you wouldnt have with the other units under the same conditions. I cat tell you how much because I dont know how to measure it. All I know is that guys like Roger Foo back in the day running R cams changed everything in his B16 and raced his EG to the ground.
What you are going to have to decide is, how much cam do I want? Then decide if you want to make the peace of mind investment.

wow thanks a lot for the info. I plan on running either itr cams or skunk2 stage2 cams depending on how much money I can scrounge up. Not sure about anything else but I'm still in the planning stages of my car so I only have the engine right now stripped down.

I'm doing this to a b16a. thinking about getting some ctr pistons. Can't remember what the compression is gonna be off the top of my head but I've got some calculations somewhere around here. I think it'll be around 11.4.1 or something like that
