Looking for input on my B16 buildup??
Ok, I've got my B16 sitting in my garage, ready to swap in, but then I got to thinking. I want to do a little more then just be ANOTHER B16 SWAPPED EG!
What I was thinking was just do some simple upgrades to the internals. Here's my plan: CTR cams, adj. cam gears, CTR pistons (stock bore, the block is low milage), shot peen/polish rods, and upgrade my valve springs/retainers. The reason I got to thinking was because I was thinking about what rev limit I wanted on my P28, but with the new stuff, I'm going to want to rev a little more.
Basically, I'm just looking for some input. What springs/retainers should I go with? Polish and ballance crank too?? What bearings??? ARP rod/head bolts???? Piston rings????? I'm trying to price all this and see if it's going to be possible for me to do.
For now, it's going to be an all motor setup, but I MAY spray in the future, nothing more than a 50 shot, IF I do. Like I said, it's a pretty low milage motor (28,XXX) and I've already got I/H/E, and an MSD 6 with cap and Blaster 3 coil, and a Type-R clutch. This is going to be my first swap and if I tear into the motor, my first motor build as well. I'm just looking for all the input I can get. Thanks for the help.

I hate to say this and I'm not trying to be an *** in anyway but if you really want a noticeable upgrade then I would just build a 1.8L block... Whether going LSVTEC or using a straight *B18C (*which is what I would do) you will have a lot nicer relaxed power... If you do choose to swap PCT slugs into that motor why not just spend the little extra to go overbore... That motor still has 28,xxx on it... LOW but still would need atleast a hone... It's just nice to have brand new walls for the new rings to seat on... Oh well go whatever way you choose... I always overbore tho, but that's just me... As for the bearings and rings I would using nothing besides OE... They'll work perfect and I personally like them best... You can have the rods shotpeened but there is no reason too... Same goes for the crank... micropolish the journals if you want but there is no need... If you wanna have the head ported... I would definately recommend Portflow... That's all I use... Portflow valvesprings and retainers work awesome with R cams... ARP bolts are not needed by any means but it's always extra insurance... As for the nitrous... I don't normally recommend squeezing on motors with PCT slugs but I'm always figuring in atleast in LSVTEC's and B18C's where the compression ratio is a lot higher then what you'll be at... Your compression will be perfect for nitrous just so long as you are not planning on milling the head or using a high compression headgasket... For nitrous I build motors anywhere from 10.5-11.5:1... Lower is pointless and I don't like going any higher... Even for light nitrous (50-75) I would recommend injectors... 310's will be about perfect with a little tuning... Sorry I went off but i'm sorta bored... Let me know if you need anything else... Peace

I plan on doing the same thing as you. I have a JDM B16 and its nice cause I'll rev it to 8k. Those two artilces gave me a good start.

I think I'm gona keep my block for now. I'm gona go CRVtec w/boost in the future, but I'm gona keep this for now. Thanks for all the info, definately going to check out prices for machine work and I'm also gona look at Portflow springs/retainers.
Tell me what you guys think, gimme some more info!! I know quite a bit, but I'm still kind of a noob
so I need all the help I can get. If I do go with the CTR slugs/bumpsticks, OEM rings/bearings, shotpeened rods (
) and Portflow springs/retainers, what do you think a good rev limit would be?? Also, what WHP and times should I expect?? Thanks for the help.

Due to the B16's shorter stroke the revabilty is awesome... Drawing less air with a shorter stroke allows you to make peak power a lot higher than bigger displacement motors... Once tuned running CTR cams I would have no doubt that you could make power to 8500-9000rpm if not a bit higher... I would look for a proggy that is limited somwhere around 9000... I work with LSVTEC's, CRVTEC's, and straight B18C's a lot more than B16's so I don't wanna try to give you any hp numbers that probably wouldn't be accurate... Price out the shotpeening and see if it fits into your budget... If it doesn't then don't worry about it... If it does then it's just a lil extra... My friend's old B16/EG that was built very similar to these ran consistent 13.30-13.50's on MT 20x6x14 slicks... Nothing extremely special but not at all bad for a B16A... With a lil squeeze 12's should be easy... Latez
Honestly, if your going to stay B16 then use it for what its good for HIGH REVS. By throwing CTR pistons your upping your compression but that gain alone will be minimal and WONT raise your redline. I say if your going to take it that far then go with this below setup or something like it to increse stability under high revs.
Block:
Arias 11.1.1 C/R pistons .25 oversize
Total seal rings
Eagle rods
ARP rod & head bolts
head:
Fully reworked head
Toda valve springs
Toda retainers
Toda Spec B's
Toda cam gears
Type-R header
Type-R intake manifold
Type-R throttle body
RC 310 injectors
Type-R ob1 ecu
Apex VTEC controller
B&M FPR
the above setup will put down amazing dyno numbers, have no problem on pump gas, and would be a reliable daily driver. just my opinion. good luck and hope this helps.
