Does he resurface the wheel as well? I need to install a new clutch and have been recommended to resurface the flywheel while I'm at it (they've told me $50).
i have an ls/vtec and i want to get the flywheel lightened/balanced, but i need an idea of how many thou. that the machinist needs to take off to lighten it to around 12lbs. any info at all would be cool., thanks.

I have an idea, how about saving your self the pain and agony of a blown clutch and flywheel and the ability to walk in a straight line by just spending the extra dollars and getting a real light flywheel!? One made of chromemoley or an aluminum one with chromemoly inserts. You don't cheap out on stuff like that it can cost you financially and physically, my dad's friend walks with a permanent limp form taking a peice of a blown flywheel into his knee. Not to mention when it blew through the floor the sheet metal wraped his foot down on to the gas pedal so he couldnt' stop accelerating.
That is a pic of the backside of the flywheel. The holes are drilled to BALANCE the flywheel after cutting. The 6 evenly space holes are the pressure plate bolt holes. The cutting was step to maintain a consistant thickness to maintain strength. The guy for did the work used to do the same to VW Bug flywheels.

WTF damn that sucks. I have never heard of that on a honda. I have heard horror stories about drive shafts and such but never a fly wheel punching thru a floor board. That must have been a lot of horse power pushing it
yes, flywheels can fly apart....what do you think scatter shields are for??? I went ahead and bought an exedy chromeoly 9 1/2 lb flywheel. It was 475......but I don't worry about the **** exploding. Sometimes you gotta spend a little extra dough for peace of mind.
i think he is refering to a domestic application, i have seen the damage from a friends clutch assemble exploding in a 66' mustang, its not pretty. the clutch debris would have to make some interesting moves to do that in a honda.
The above story was from a domestic vehicle. I didn't want to scare anyone just trying to get the point across of how the cheap way out can end up costing you more later. Oh yeah I have the ZEX chromemoley flywheel in my car, it's supposed to be the copy of the Jun spec one. Can't complain so far, runs great and no holes in my floor.
I have seen those scatter shields for imports, hahaha they don't look like much to me. Anyone here have one? Or maybe had the unfortunate chance to try one out?
