Default late vtec engagement

I am purchasing a 98 hatch with a 96 gsr motor. to me it seemed as if vtec kicked in at almost six grand, do you think he does not have a gsr ecu

Take off kick panel look at ECU P72=GSR P30=SI.

The stock tach is probably just off. Most are.

Either that or you are hearing the secondary intake manifold runners opening and mistaking it for VTEC. VTEC on a GSR is @ 4400 and the sencondairys open up @ 5700, thats the loud noise you hear.
