knock sensor wire! shielded?
Somewhere I got the notion that KS wires have to be shielded so they don't pick up interference. I am putting in an engine this weekend and need to know. I found some at a store and got it, it is two wires in a jacket with some metal foil looking stuff to shield, one wire to power and one to ground (to the IM?). Or can I just use good ol' cheapy 18 gauge?

I was hooking up my knock sensor wiring that has a large jacket with two smaller covered wires, one uncovered wire, and some foil type stuff. The guy whose garage we are using said that I should use one wire to power the KS and the uncovered wire to ground with, because that touches the foil which allegedly is what shields the wire. Is this correct, use the uncovered wire to ground with?
The guy at the shop is correct. As long as the unshielded wire contacts the foil, you are fine. If in doubt, use an ohm meter to check that they conduct together.
When I wired my GSR, I used shielded wire for the KS, but all the aftermarket conversions don't bother. So, I'd question if it's really required. It is a shielded wire in the original (OBD1) loom.
And, I grounded the line at the ECU.
