okay, i did my search, so no flaming!! anyways, my question is do you really need a knock sensor, i mean is your engine necessary going to blow up if you drive it around too much without the ks. i know that your ecu might go into limp mode because you dont have one, but is it going to blow up or not. the reason i ask is because im planning on using the car (94 eg with b16a) as a commuter from home to college (approx. 100 miles in distance) so im a little worried that if i dont have it set up, then it mind blow or something. another question, did the d16z6 have a knock sensor on it, because when i used my wire harness from the d16z6 to plug into the b16a sir2, there was a plug for it, but when i went to look on my d16z6 for the knock sensor, there was none to be found. thanks!

No you don't really need it. Unless the ECU is looking for it. Then you do.
EDIT: Because it will go into limp mode. A lot of people get rechipped ecu's without the knock sensor.
I believe the knocks didn't start showing up on engines until OBDII. (96)

that's what i thought also.... we both could be wrong. someone else please verify this.

I have a 94 and it has a knock sensor. I know for sure cause I broke it when pulling the head and had to buy a new one.

really? well i dont see it on my d16z6. i know its suppose to be under the intake manifold, but there's no knock sensor there. i was wandering the same thing. but thanks guys!! i

okay....
so if i dont have a knock sensor on my d16z6, then i assume there is no plug on the wire harness for a knock sensor and i would have to wire it direct to the ecu right. keep in my i have a b16a in an eg si.
my second question is what type of wire do i use and where to buy them!!

any wire should be fine just get a pin out of a spare harness. solder the wire to the pin and insert the pin into the plug. if you cant do that just feed the wire to correct spot on the plug and bend it over should work fine. havin no knock will not put you in limp mode. its just annoyin having a c.e.l.
the wire goes into pin d3

At least for Honda motors, the factory KS is wack as hell. It throws timing back waaay to much when it detects knock (like 15+ degrees). That's why a car running an ecu that looks for a KS, while its unplugged, will feel hesitation while driving.
But, having the KS disabled is tony-the-tiger--->teeeerrific!
From past experiences & knowledge, you only need a KS if your compression ratio is around 12.0+ if you're natruall aspirated. I'm not sure if running a KS on a turbo or NOS engine is good or bad either (me no turbo/nos guru).
But if the motor is totally stock compression or under 12.0, you don't need to fret about the KS. None of the 88-95 SOHC or SOHC VTEC engines have a knock sensors nor does the ecu look for one. KS's are found on 96+ SOHC engines though.
Your B16 ecu will look for a KS, unless you have it reprogrammed to have that specific sensor disabled. (plug time) If you need this ecu service, I can provide it, check my link below.
I know that when a KS detects a knock it generates an AC pulse.... With the KS unplugged it will cause the car to run a bit laggy so could you ground the KS go something besides the block then wire it up just as you normally would to disable it??? I'm not really planning on doing this because if i was I would prolly just chip a P28 but I was just wondering if this would work.. Laterz
Actually, it would be more accurate to call the knock sensor a microphone. As the engine is running, it picks up the vibration as a "sound". Knocking, or pinging, creates a different "sound" and the ECU knows what to do with it
As far as what had it and what didn't, I believe every B series VTEC motor has them. Honda started using them more frequently in the past 6 years. D16z6's didn't have them, but I believe that D16y8's do.
I've talked to a few people that were trying to decide which ecu to run and have converted by hondata. Since older ECU's (like the D16Z6's) are cheaper, it would be a better alternative. The question that kept coming up was the necessity for a knock sensor. According to Hondata tuners, the factory knock sensor is not designed for performance (as would the J&S safeguard system). So, for the sake of running an ECU for performance it isn't necessary. If you want a knock sensor to maximize output, then you need something like the J&S safeguard.

It doesn't just transmit a sound signal through a wire tho... If it just did that the if you disconnected it nothing would happen... A KS still creates an AC pulse that the ECU interprets as a ping, knock, etc.
