Default K series question.

What are the sleeves made out of?And can aftermarket pistons be used without having to resleeve?I was just wondering because both the h22 and f20c have FRM sleeves, and aftermarket pistons are too harsh for them.Thanks.

i don't know, but IMHO you could bet they are FRM.
Does anyone knows for sure?

It seems like most sleeves are made of either cast iron or nodular iron. As for pistons being 'rough' on the sleeves, this can happen if you use low silicon race pistons. Because they expand more than higher silicon forged pistons or cast pistons, they have to be run looser. This causes the pistons to slap around in the cylinders as the engine warms up. And as you might guess, this is why they are rough on cylinders. This wear gets especially bad if you drive away on a cold engine as you would with a normal street motor (as opposed to warming the engine up before driving away). For this reason, low silicon forged pistons are not a good choice for a street motor. They are noisy when cold. And longevity is not good.

storminmatt-..thanks for the input, but i knew most of that already....thats why i was wondering about the sleeves....FRM sleeves are softer than normal iron sleeves and aftermarket forged pistons can be rougher on them than on normal iron sleeves..

Kal-what kind of steel and can low silicon pistons be used without damaging the sleeves?

I really just need to kow if they are made of FRM or not...it seems like nowadays alot of honda's "good" engines use FRM sleeves....i hope not though.

As far as FRM goes, JDogg was telling me a while back they make FRM compatible forgings now for the H22. Drop into the stock bore, enjoy. PM him with questions

i believe the k-series engines use the steel similar to the b-series motors(post in the ep3/dc5 section to make sure) and i'm not sure about the low silicon pistons.

but i am sure they're steel and not FRM.

FRM is only in the h22a,f20c,c32a.

And there's only one definite piston that works in the stock FRM sleeves and that is Jun Pistons (Special alloy). All others claim to work, but in the end, they usually fail.

What? FRM is stronger, think about it, why is it used on all high compression honda engines? (especially BIKES)

I'm shocked that they aren't FRM as KAL said.

I didnt say FRM was weaker, I said it was softer.
