jdm gs-r vs. type-r
hey guys, i went with my buddy to go look at a jdm type r today, and i have a few questions that i dont have time to search for my buddies car is in the shop as im writing this and i dont want him to get fucked over.
so when i was looking at the motor the first thing i noticed was that there was a b16 intake manifold on it, and a black valve cover, also on the drivers side motor mount had a 2 bolt pattern to bolt the mount onto the motor, and i have a usdm type r which takes 3 bolts, and i donno if the jdm type r is diff, so i need to know if there was a way to tell if the block is a b18c-r or just a b18c(gsr) by the vin or anything, cause when i asked the guy about it he seemed kinda scetch about it, and to me it looks like gs-r bottom end with a b16 head?!?!?!

look at the head and see what year it is. if the stamp is earlier than 96, it isn't an r head. an itr crank pulley is noticeably smaller in diameter, most jdm r heads don't have a vtec oil pressure switch, you will only be able to see two of the drivers side mount bolts because the third is under the timing cover. question him as to why it doesn't have a red valve cover or r intake manifold/tb etc.. make sure he drops the original price b/c it isn't a full type r motor if at all.

yeah, but im talking about the mount from ur car to the other mount, not the mount with the prongs, cause on my type-r it has 2 prongs for nuts and then a hole closer to the motor where u put a bolt, and where do i checkfor the year of the head?

yeah i did question him about the IM and valve cover and he was like "oh well i bought it like that, so they must have changed it" and kinda avoided the whole situation, but i told my buddy to get everything on paper just in case itsnot a type-r, is there a way to tell by the vin on the block?
its really kinda hard to tell type r from b16 heads bcoz type r heads are made from b16 castings. just take the valve cover off and see if it hase dual valvesprings. most type r casting also reads pr3-3 or pr3-4.
yeah my type r head has pr3-3, his has pr3-1, so i donno and the year on it is 98, so its from a 99 car, and i guess the valvetrain was changed, cause it has stage 3 camsin it at least thats what the guy said, but ill look at it tomm, but yeah i wish there was a better way to tell, also the vin on the block or the numbers below the engine code is 1001200 so i donno if that says anything about it being a type r i know the first #(1) is suppose to mean the 1st year that that block was made
