Default ITR Final Drive Install Gone Wrong

Well I decided to pull my S80 Jdm gsr lsd tranny off to install the 4.7 JDM ITR final drive last night. No problems there came out with ease, the problems came today when I split my case only to find a 14 bolt differential. The ITR ring gear is a 10 bolt and is machined differently then the gsr ring gear, I'm in a bind here I don't know what to do.

In addition to finding out I had the wrong differential, I broke a bolt off in the differential. I read the service manual and said the bolts were reverse thread, apparently not on this differential. Luckily when I was drilling the bolt out from the back it started to back out under the drills power so no need for the easy-outs.

I had considered buying an OBX lsd but am weary of the quality, I would ideally like to get an oem type-r differential but I'm sure even with my discount it would be no less then $700which is out of my price range. As for the OBX lsd what kind of bearings are you using the cartridge type like on the type-r or the ones like I have? Anyone have any recommendations??

I'd try to find a used ITR diff, and if you can't find one, then just buy a Quaife LSD. It will be well worth the money.

The differential bearing you want to use is: 91005-P80-E31 (x2) enclosed ball bearings with an 80mm differential shim. Knock out all of the shells and plates from the housings and use just one 80mm diff shim and the two enclosed ball bearings.

The only thing you can do is use a diff made for a ITR.

In addition, I'm surprised those bolts are reverse-threaded. I know K-series are opposite, but all of the B's should be reverse. Interesting...

I'll be back in this thread later. Need to head to work.

I ran into this exact same problem. I ened up replacing they synros and selling the GSR LSD trans for 900.

OBX LSD > OEM LSD.

OBX differentials have been proven over and over again. Do some research, there is no reason not to use it.

It's a GSR. He said S80... and the B16s all have closed bearings. The 1.8L VTEC trannies have roller bearings up until like 1996 or so. Same type of diff from the cable B16 trannies though. Search for pics and you'll quickly see the difference in shapes and everything. They are two different animals.

To the OP, if you are going to get a new OEM LSD and spend that kind of money, you might as well just pick up a Quaife and have at it. I'd say try and find a used OEM ITR LSD to fit in there and pick up the closed bearings so you can ditch the roller bearings. Unless those work, you'll probably need new ring gear bolts, too.

As per the OBX, I have zero experience with them, but I know there is a sticky tutorial in this forum I believe that walks through tearing one down and retorquing everything. I hear they are decent when everything is redone in order to double-check it all. But like I said, have no experience with OBX.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys, I was looking for a used OEM diff. but they seem pretty hard to come by. I had considered the OBX but I can't justify spending $350 on it then bearings, shims, etc... So I called JHP who I ordered the parts from and they are giving me a full refund. I had thought about selling my tranny and buying a new ITR tranny but the more I thought about it I really don't want my rpm's any higher at highway speeds as it's already 4k-ish at 80 mph. I have decided I would rather just make more power and put this money towards some cams. Anyway tranny is back in car and about to go take a little test drive since it's 60 degrees outside.

They aren't hard to find at all, I just picked one up for 300 shipped. Took about ten minutes to hunt down. Keep and eye on the ITR FS forums, they pop up all the time.
