i was wondering if anyone has problems passing emissions with a itb set up? i live in AZ and emissions supposedly arent to tough to pass and we obviously dont have CARB so it wouldnt be a legality issue. just wondering if its hard to get them to pass.
thanks

It largely depends on one thing; do you have a visual inspection in Arizona? If so, forget it! The truth of the matter is that visual inspections will nab enthusiasts WAY before any tailpipe testing will. With this said, if you DON'T have a visual inspection in Arizona, you have a chance. It probably is possible to get clean emissions from ITBs.

In California, it is illegal to change an 'emissions sensitive' part unless the part has a CARB number. And here in California, the term 'emissions sensitive' is used VERY broadly to include pretty much everything on the motor. I am not sure about Arizona.

ok then lets say in arizona the only visual you have to pass is for a catalytic converter. when running itb's does anybody know if they are hard to get them to run clean? anybody have actual experience with this? i know you guys in California cant pass because visual, but i know there is other guys out there with them.
let me know

you have to have good engine management so you don't run too rich and multiple map sensors (i think AEM EMS is the only one that allows it to run mutliple MAP sensors) but with tuning keeping the a/f in mind, it shouldn't be a problem.
if anything, run two hiflow cats.

damn are you sure about all the other things needed to get them to pass? do you need a map for each runner? and do you really need a standalone for them, wouldnt like worst case scenerio be a wideband o2 t otune the a/f ratio? people with hondata are running itb's, correct? maybe just a hour at the dyno with a vafc?
thanks and let me know if you have firsthand experience people

yeah your lucky, but i have been too beacuse im registered in a county without emissions, but all of AZ in 18 months is getting smog rules. im totally cool with that though beacause if we are allowed to do whatever and dump bad **** all over the earth then will be living in acid rain when we are old men. just dont beleive in all the visual ****, but as long as you have a functional cat it should be cool. anyways, i dont want this to turn into a conservation debate, so anybody have any info?
thanks
thanks
AZ emissions dont have a visual. They just want to see every smog device that was originally equipped on the car. They dont care what engine it is or what it looks like. All you have to do is have your charcol canister, cat, o2, and egr if the car had one like vx, hx. Oh yeah, and you have to blow clean. If you have a problem we just dump 3-5 gallons of methanol fuel in the gas tank.
CA is going to start doing fuel sampling to catch people doing that pretty soon though.
Good Luck.

yeah your right on all of that, but i just want to know if they do run clean. it just seens every little thing affects emissions, even switching out a stock airbox. also i need to get a type r oil pump for the crank angle sensor and get a knock sensor in so when i put the obd2 ecu in it wont throw a code. anyone is cali get these to pass? i know you wouldnt pass visual with them open, but if you put the plastic plenum on?
even with the plastic on it, it still doesnt have the carb # thats the only way to pass a visual. Sometimes you can find a shop willing to overlook a visual if it blows clean but they like it to at least look near legal.
Those have a LOT more airflow than a stock manifold does, so it might be difficult to pass just because the computer should try to make it richen up to get close to stoich. Maybe the plastic plenum will help reduce the airflow.

yeah thats what i would guess, thats partly what the plenum is there for, that and to quiet them. but damn there has to be someone on here that has some experience with these out of california and passing emissions, right?
I used to live in AZ in phoenix. It is easy to pass emissions out there. I had a friend with a 97 ITR with ITB and he passed with no problems. Just tune it right. I don't know what he did to tune it I just know it was never a problem.
