Information on the VX, HX, vtec-e, engines please?

Information on the VX, HX, vtec-e, engines please?
These times of high gas prices has now brought me back to purchasing another civic...after not driving one for about 2 years.
My intention is to get a daily driver beater, possibly an HX if I can find one for a good price.
If not then I am looking to swap one of these "economic" honda engines, into a dx,lx,ex model civic. I know the VX which got around 50+ MPG if i'm not mistaken was only offered from 92-95. Apparently there was supposed to be a 96+ predecessor but it never hit the US, but we did get the HX.
So a few questions if you could help me out.
1.) What engines are in the VX and HX
2.) Is there a JDM/EDM equivalent, if so what is it?
