Right, it just multiplies the engine's torque more, giving more torque to the wheels. It makes no difference to the engine.
As an example, my crx probably makes around 1000lb-ft at the wheels.

lol. As I first said, you get more torque at the wheels at the expense of speed (another confirmation); meaning that your engine spins faster than before the gear change for any given speed.
