Ignition Trouble (Help)
I have an 02 civic ex with a Coil on plug ignition and the past few days when I cold start it, it breaks up and backfires some for the first minute or so and I see some hesistation. Well last night It started breaking up more on higher Rpms and backfires more. When I get on it, it feels like once I get to 5k the rpms start climbing alot slower then usual.I checked the plugs(Boshe platinum) and the they look perfectly white(had them in car for about 5 months). Then should be tan by now if all was well and the tips are a tad white on the ends. Im guessing that My gap may be too big,but if thats not it then where would I measure the resistance on the coil to make sure they are all working within spec? I've done this plent on distributor ign. but not on coils. anyone got any advice?
I had a problem that acted just like that and I went crazy tryin to figure out the problem. Turned out it was the Map sensor. Try unplugging it when the cars off then see if it starts better. But if it is the ignition coils and you want to check it this is haynes manual directions: "Disconnect the primary electrical connectors from the ignition coi. Using an ohmmeter touch the probes to the primary terminals (the two screws that say + & - ) of the coil, measure the primary resitance and compare to the factory spec ( 0.6 - 0.8ohms). Touch the probes to the secondary winding terminal and the positive primary terminal (the ignition output with the spring and the + screw). Measure the secondary resistance and compare to the resistance specs (12.8 - 19.2 Ohms). If the coil fails either check replace with a new part. I hope this helps you somewhat. Let me know how you make out.
well I have an emenage on my ecu that has to have the map wire cut and sodered into. so i'll check the wiring to make sure it's not loose. but when I was connecting it and the map wire was off it broke up and woldn't let me rev past 3k. So i don;t think it's the map sensor but I have an extra engine at home with 9k miles on it. I'll try swapping them out. I disconnected the battery after I changed the spark plugs thinking that maybe the ecu stored the misfire codes and mabey it needs to reset so im gonna crank it up when I get out of work and check. But thanks alot for explaining how to check the resistance on the coils. it's just like checking a distributor system but less things to check. thanks alot
I'm glad you mentioned you got the e-manage because I'm thinking about buying one but I haven't really heard anyone's results yet. Is it pretty user friendly?easy to install, etc? How much did it cost? This is the unit from GReddy right? Thanks for the input.
