!!I got an idea !! please help
ok I'm not sure if this belongs here but this is were I spend most of my time so.....
I've got a good mechanical(performance) invention for a car but I don't nkow how to go about puting a patend on it and I haven't even made a prototype but I'm working on it .... I'm really afraid to tell anybody because they might steal my idea so how do you patend something and how much does it cost ( I'll tell you all what it is when I get it patend ) (I've got to do this cause I hade the cryo cold air intake Idea like 3 years ago) but just didn't go anywhere with it

I'm NOT a lawyer, but we've had these issues at work. Having a detailed log of your work WITH DATES, and having an invention disclosure document will help in case someone has the same idea before you finish. It's good to have some objective evidence of what you're doing; in case you ever have to try to prove that you were working on it first.
And...

Visit http://www.uspto.gov for tons of information. I believe you can search patent databases to find out whether it's already there.

Go to the bookstore and read up. I did.
It takes between 2-5 years to get a patent down and you CAN DIY. Just make sure its perfefct bc if its rejected it takes a while to start over. Like said, record everything in a diary and have a written/drawn model and you need to make a working model as well. Good luck!

when the whole idea is on paper and you have the prototype...put it in a sealed envelope and mail it to yourself from the post office.. when it comes don't open it..file it away.. the postmark will tell the date so if along the lines of getting a real patent someone comes up with it you have proof you had the idea first
