If your car is stock, take it to the dealer. High HC on a stock car can mean the cat is failing or has already failed, and they are required to replace it under warranty (smog equipment has an extended warranty).
If you're modified, then its your tune. High HC is unburned fuel, meaning its running rich.

Warranties on cats are only 8yr/80k miles.

I thought it was longer for smog equipment. Maybe I should burn a tank of leaded fuel now, since I'm about to hit the 75k mile mark, and get a free cat.

CA does a sniffer test, regardless of OBD version.
Upsets me too. My 00 GSR barely passes (34/49 HC measured, 35/50 permitted), and its stock other than an AEM CAI.

Yep, HC and the ride should be compatible too. I've seen lots of cars that were emmiting lots of HC when revving up and I think that's normal. If you have stock parts, be careful it might cause another problem in your car.

so what should i do then? my friend told me to run the cat hella hot and to put denatured alcohol in the gas tank. im also gonna put my stock exhaust back on.
first make sure the guy didnt [freak] you, check to see if it even has a cat on it, let alone a new one....running alcohol will cause the motor to run hotter burning off the extra fuel, but if it gets too hot while they are testing it they will shut the car off, which [freak]s up the whole damn test and then you are back to square 1

This dropped HC by 33% on a 1988 Civic. Took it from gross polluter fail to pass.

Pep Boys carries it.
Denatured alcohol helps burn as well. Though, this is what I'd use instead.

It is a gas line anti-freeze, but lowers combustion temp and ends up reducing HC a little and NOx a lot.

iso heet is denatured alcohol, although there is 2 different kinds, just read the label to make sure your getting the right one, the other is in a blue bottle and I think it is methylated alcohol? not 100% sure ,its been a while
