Default How to pull check engine codes in an element.

figured this would be the best place to try and figure it out. Anyone know. I am a do it your self person and WILL NOT take it anywhere to just have the code pulled.

I wouls apreciate any inputs any of you may have since the element is pretty new and not many people have them.

I don't know if you can make the dash CEL blink the codes, so I'd just go to AutoZone and have them slap an OBD2 code reader on it.

the better ones on the market are from snap on and mac, the ones from autozone or o'reilly's will only get u in the right ball park.

the ones from autozone cost anywhere from 150 to 300, whereas, the ones from snap on and mac can cost up to 5000

damn. I am better off getting a hondata or AEM EMS and just using that as a diagnostics tool.

The money you spend on hondata or AEM EMS you could easily buy a "decent" code reader. I just picked one up for just over $100 last night. Works just fine.

You can either buy an OBD2 code reader, (ive seen them for less than $50) or you can jump pins 4 and 9 on the DLC and count the CEL blinks.

Nope, those systems can't display trouble codes as far as I know.

hey dude its a honda element with a warrenty. y dnt u just bring it to a dealer have them pull the code for you and fix the problem. it aint gonna even cost you anything cuz it should be under warrenty. other than that the snap on one works good but the real good one for honda is the hds. but good luck to you

HMM Its a honda element without a waranty because its a 2003. And I dont let ANYONE work on my cars because if something goes wrong I have only to balme myself.

This is my first newer car. I have always delt with 95 and newer, but I am a little older so I like something a little newer.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Chiovnidca &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

Ok now I feel stupid asking, but what is the DLC, and where can I find it?

Well no matter what, one of your first investments needs to be a Helms manual. And that would have answered this question by now.

A sub $100 OBD2 code reader from autozone will work. But it won't get some vendor propreitary information, and it won't measure engine paramaters, it will just pull codes.

I don't get it, thats just a more expensive tester that does pretty much the same stuff the Honda HDS does, but for twice the money. to that, and to calling people names.

Why would a 2003 not have a warranty? You have 3 years, unless you have an assload of miles. And the whole reason for the warranty and making someone else do it is because then you have someone else to hold responsible. Trust me, because of the warranty survey you'll get about the work performed, they really want to fix it right the first time. And it will be free, becase not only is it under the 3 year warranty, being a check engine light means it's probaby under the 8 year federal emmisions warranty. I'm not telling you to not do stuff yourself, it's great that you do. But there are some times when you can sit on your duff and watch other people do things, and I would take advantage of that.

The DLC is the data link connector, which is the diagnostic port used to pull the codes stored in the computer. On the Element it should be located under the drivers side of the dash. It's a grey trapeziod shaped connector.

how many miles do u have on the element. cuz if its an 03 there should still be a warrenty on it. if not how come u didnt get an extended.and if its out of warrenty have honda pull the code out. and u replace the part yourself. it would sill be cheaper than buying yourself a scan tool and doing it yourself. just a thought
