Default how much would a shop charge for this

im doing some work for a friend of mine and keeping his engine instead of cash for labor

if he went to a shop what would be a rough estimate for labor to do the following
because he feels like giving me the engine is a bit too much for the amout of work im doing.(its a gsr motor tranny and axles)

remove his wrecked front end
remove his complete swap
remove the damaged core support and part of the frame(up to shock tower on one side)

then
complete 5 lug swap (both cars are ABS)
install jdm front end and fix damaged frame/weld the core support etc
install new motor and tranny and the rest of the engine bay.
and paint to match rest of the car including engine bay parts
itr steering wheel, gauge cluster, radio, etc other little details as well

im not even going to try and estimate a price,it would be too far off because it all just depends where you go to have the work done/where you live live etc.

but i will say this.
It would cost well over 2000 for everything listed just in labor..i want to say close to $3k-$4k

i see full gsr swaps with EVERYTHING included run for $1200-$2000

in all honesty,i think your friend would owe you a bit more..lol.

Joe Schmoe walk in? about 2-3k IMO.

Acquaintance? Motor is a square deal!

Friend of mine? Make him help do the work, pay for material and buy lunch and drinks for each day is spent on the project.

The gsr motor has 200k miles
Hes more like friend of a friend.
I thought it was a fair deal
Since he doesnt have to pay me cash
Just wanted to get a second opinion

I'll second the other responces. a 200k mileage swap as payment, you're giving him a pretty great deal.

I don't do mechanic work professionally any more, but when people ask me to do stuff on the side I quote them 20% less than the shop I worked at (since I don't have the overhead...) which is $50/hour or $60 for electrical. it may sound high for a shade tree, but it keeps me out of the type of situation you're in now.

Make it clear to this guy that you're doing him a favor by only getting the swap from him.

Ditto all the above^^^

An engine w/200K mi. on it and a tranny is cheap for the work that needs to be done.

We are at $80 hr and would quote labour at $2500-$3500, looking it up in our Chilton labour guide and it is about double that, [full pop]. 94

It would be about a grand to just replace and install motor and then another 1700-2200 for the body work so you are giving the guy a hell of a deal because I say that motor is worth about 2k tops if it is good condition.

I honestly think it sounds like a bad deal for both of you. You only get an engine worth $2k at best for $4k worth of work, and he gets frame work done by a shadetree mechanic who (no offense) doesn't know what he's doing and might not get everything straight.

But you don't know what the work is worth. I'm not saying you're bad at working on cars but there's no replacement for an experienced body shop with laser equipment.

the frame is traight past shock tower it only crumpled in the front. the hood and fender still fit like stock ( he got a bit lucky with it)

Well that's good (about the damage, I mean -- too bad about the lazer sharks). Sounds like it could be fun to do. Glad it's not me though! I'm not smart enough for that sort of stuff.

Friends getting a hell of a deal...... Personally I wouldn't do it for a 200k motor swap no madder how good the motor ran without some cash. I'd say shop charge over 3grand , specialy depending on location !!!!
