How important is preload when installing a diffirential? Need to know ASAP.

As the title says, How important is it to have the right preload on the diffirential, and what would the side effects be off having it incorrect, thanks
From what I have read, preload is a huge factor in determining the behavior of a differential. Lots of preload will make it lock up easier, while less will let it "do the differential thing" a little easier, making it more friendly to turn-in and such.
I'd like to learn more from those more knowledgable.
