How important is this part of the distributor?
I bought an EBAY unit. It operates fine as I installed it and the car definately runs. Then I realized it is missing the item in the picture. It seems it is just a dust/debris shield, but correct me if I'm wrong!
Thanks

It's actually an arc shield. It prevents the possibility of spark arc to the contacts on the ignitor.
It's a five minute install and a $5 part. I recommend installing one.

Ok I don't have one. The one in the photo is from my other distributor in the other car. I'll double check that the part is indeed missing and then order it.
Looks like #5 in this illustration

its an arc shield.it'll still work but you run a chance of the spark arcing in the coil pack.rare but it happens with higher power coils.
