Default How does the VTEC solenoid work?

I know it sends a signal from the ecu to activate and deactivate VTEC, but is it two separate signals, or is it on/off?

Does the ecu supply the voltage as long as VTEC is engaged, or does it send a signal to activate VTEC, and then based of TPS and rpms etc send a signal to disengage?

Thanks

A solenoid is just a fancy name for an electromagnetic actuator. In the case of the VTEC solenoid is is a simple valve that activates on a positive signal from the ECU. It is normally closed (zero volts). at the VTEC point determined by the computer (There are actually 10 seperate settings depending on load and other conditions) the ECU sends +12 volts to the solenoid which opens the valve letting pressurized oil into the rocker arms which activates the larger cam follower.

Thats it in a nutshell. Its really a beautifully simple system.

Great answer... That's exactly it... There are the several things that your ECU looks for to engage VTEC just as 92sleepR was saying... Here's just a few more... ECT, TPS, VSS, RPM, VTEC press (VTM), and there are a few others but i can't think right now... hehe Latez
