Default How does one transport a motor?

I'm fixing to buy an H23 from a local seller and I have never done this before. What do I do with the engine? Do i set it on it's side? I know I couldn't just set it on the oilpan or something lol. Can anyone give me a pretty detailed description of what to do so I can be careful?

<shrug> I just set it on oil pan on a flat surface with some wood to support the shallow side so the motor sits level

you can just set it on the oil pan. Just make sure you have something to prevent it from tipping over. I just transported a b16 in a van this weekend. I laid a piece of plywood under it.

I just take out the passenger seat, put a few layers of cardboard on the carpeting, and set the engine in this space. I have probably saved well over $1000 on freight shipping by doing this.

ive hauled motors and trannys at the same time in my 88 escort up a mountain. shes in the bone yard now but still ran when they came to get it.
i had it down. i would put the motor in set it against the back seat and on both sides of the car where the brackets are for the back seat to hook i would run a chain from one bracket then across the motor to the other bracket. no moving or slideing, although i have just thrown them in there on the side and said the hell with it just make sure the oil is drained first, trust me

...if you dont want to set it on the oil pan, you can take it apart and reassemble it at your pad.
*edit*
..yes, this is sarcasm. the oil pan will be fine.

Thanks for the replies guys. It's going to be going into the back of a 91 Ford explorer and this sounds very doable... I'm just going to have to get me some rope. My lude shall live again!

Take a used tire that is not on rim...

lay the tire down, throw the motor on top.

quick warning before you do it though make sure it is completely drained of all of its fluids. also bring a friend because the LS i picked up was really heavy and i guess the h23 is heavier. last bit of advise is make sure you have some way to keep the motor from rolling cuz it will do damage to your car and possibly bust out a window, i just had my friend sit in the back with it lol. thats all i can tell you i have done this about 3 times in my volvo now with no prob except a big oil stain in the rear carpet

I drove 300miles with a b18b, b18a and a gsr trans in the hatch and on the rear seats of my 97ek hatch, loading with the forklift was fun too. It was fine except the fact it looked kinda funny with the *** end slammed to the ground.
