Default How do you remove the Synchros in your gearbox ?

The synchros in your gearbox is what makes you "have" to use the "clutch" to engage each gear . In some forms of motor sports ( Ralling , some track events ) the cars use what is called a "H-box" ( dog box , dog gears ) , which has straight-cut gears . These straight cut gears need the clutch at low speed , but once you run your car at high rpm the gears in the gearbox spin faster , and as they spin faster you can just drop it into the next gear with out the use of a clutch .
Therefore , if you can get rid of the Synchro gears and make them straight-cut you can use you gearbox with out the clutch !

This would be beneficial for those who Auto-X , allowing them to use left-foot braking technique while applying the "gas" and also droping a gear if needed .
Drag racers can also use this to eliminate the chance of "miss shifting" , once they give a hard "tug" the gear will be engaged.

So I just wanted to know if anyone knows of any shops that can remove the synchros ?
Has any one ever done this before ?

Please dont tell me Quaife ( too much $$$$$ ) !

dog style gears are just a rough/loose style of a synchro.

Without those little brass rings, double clutching would be a everyshift event and be slow as all get out.

No, your idea in NOT able to be workable, but atleast you are thinking!

Not a ME because I needed a second language to goto college!!!!!
That was (OMG!) 18-19 years ago!

Oh ok thanks !

But do you know any links to anyone who makes "DOG Gear" transmissions for Hondas , other the Quaife ?

Straight cut gears refer to the way the teeth look. Straight gears are easier to make, stronger for the same size and a lot more noisy when running. Most modern cars have helical gears that allow a more gradual meshing of the gear-tooth faces and is quiet.

You can remove the syncros, but you will not like it. A better idea is to shift a synco box w/out using the clutch by practicing rpm-matching.

Be noisy what do you mean ?
Do you mean a "whining" sound ? ( rally cars make that sound )

If that is what you mean I love to hear that sound ( I may be strange that way ) , especially if you have close ratio box ( where every gear sounds like a 1st gear ) .

Thanks

Alright, for one, I think that whining sound a rally car makes is probably the turbo spining, but I'm not sure what you are talking about. As far as the noise the other member was refering to, its kind of a clanky noise because they teeth on the gears do not mesh together as they spin as quietly as regular gears (its very obnoxious).

Secondly, you do not need to take out your synchros to shift with out your clutch, I do it every once in a while to feel like I am circuit racing (I wish). To take the car out of gear while you are driving, is just as you let off the gas to change gears pull it out of gear. Next is either wait for the rpms to drop to where they would be if you were in the next gear, or give it some gas so the rpms raise to the point at which the previous gear would be. If I have confused you, just email me or something, and I will try to explain better. Or if you already know how to do so, then just do it on your stock transmission. From what I have researched on it, it will hurt nothing (as long as you don't grind).

I get what you are saying , I know how to do that . But suppose that you are Auto-Xing or racing someone shifting like that is very time consuming .
say you come into a sharp turn ( while Auto-Xing ) you are applying the 'gas' while left-foot braking to tuck the rear end , but yet still the rpm drops , you can't gear down while left-foot braking and gassing .

2) F2 rally cars are front wheel drive and not turbo charged . the gear boxes whine . I dont live in the US , and where I am from rallying is pretty big ( I plan on rallying my car ) , so clutchless shifting would be beneficial .

The whine he is talking about is the gear noise. Try going in reverse.....remember that noise? Reverse gears in most manual cars are straight cut, imagine all your gears making that noise! I would love it!

HXMan , well you and I can now enjoy the whine .

Thanks to Mista Bone for the link hookup .

I contacted the people from the link and they said they can sort me out with the straight-cut gears.

Question...why do you want to downshift while breaking with your left foot. Ever heard of heel-toe downshifting? I'd learn to do it if I were you. It'llsave you some trouble while driving on a track.
