How do I select Main Bearing colors without pulling the crank?????
Help - I am doing a rebuild on my daily driver, and I need new main bearings, but my parts guy wants to know what color the old bearings are. I wont have time to have my car sit while bearings come in. The colors just specify different thickness right? I am going to be swapping in a balanced/polished LS crank that used to have green bearings. any thoughts on this?
My thoughts on this are to pull the crank and measure the bearings areas so that you can put the proper bearings in.
Since it is my only running vehicle at the moment, I had hoped to have all the parts and do it on a weekend. I just dont trust the timelyness of the local parts houses to have my parts at a moments notice on a weekend. Thanks for the good advice, I only wish I had time to do it right.
Any idea on what size the different colors stand for?

the block has a stamp code where the oilpan gasket touches the block, and that has the codes letters fro the block main bearings. mathc these with a factory crank's markings / stamp code and youre all set.
but if your worked crank has had any dimensional changes from polishing yuou may need larger / thicker bearings... so you can go ACL and plastigage it or measure everything with a bore mic and calipers to figure out what you need.
no easy solution for you my friend.... other than ACL's and hope they all fit right on the money (which they should an ddo 99.9% of the time)

Sorry to say it that way, but the true way is to get it gauged. It sounds like you are using the block in the car, but you are using another crank that you had worked on the side. The only true way because no crank is ground the same nor block for that matter is to get it gauged
the stamp code - is this on the side (which side?), or directly under the pan gasket (requiring pan removal to see)? Thanks

Yes, it will be done right, but if I can have everything right off, that would be ten times better than to be at the mercy of the local parts dept at 3pm Saturday afternoon when I have it all tore down. I just picked up a plastiguage, and I hope to buy a set of bearings based on this block code. When I get it apart I will guage it, and if it matches the block code then Im set, if not, then im fishin. The dream is to tear down on saturday and have it all back together ready to get back to work again monday.
I know you guys are probly sayin dream on, but this i will.
you can use the numbers/letters on your crank and a helms to see what bearings you need. the sure fire way however is to individually plasitguage each bearing to make sure it is within spec. good luck

Thanks a bunch, that pic is great. I have a Helms on order, but it has come yet, does anyone else have any idea what the numbers mean? Mine show all "A" for the mains and "1" and "2" for the rods, also the green circles have "3" and "H" - are these important. TY peoples
what about ordering three sets then plastiguageing it when you pull it apart. return the other two and your golden

Even if you get the numbers off the block, you will not have the rod codes until you get the pan off.
