Default how do i know if i have an LSD?

i know its not a honda, so no flames please, but i just got a 1987 toyota supra that supposedly has a limited slip differential. (LSD).. how can i find out if i have one? i know you can spin the tires and see if both spin, but if i jack the car up in the air, is there a way to tell? thanks.

I ran a 90 Corolla with a JDM sc engine/gearbox set-up for about 3 years. Thathad a lsd g/box but outwardly it was impossible to tell it apart from a non-lsd. Toyota for some reason just did things that way....! Some say that there are codes on the box itself, but I never found any.

As you said....best (and easiest) way is to jack up your car and spin one wheel. If the other spins IN THE SAME DIRECTION, then its lsd, my friend.

With a gear type LSD, spinning the wheel does not tell you anything. Especially with Honda differentails. They will act exactly the same as an open diff will when doing this so called 'test'. They will spin in the opposite direction.

This test is only to verify operation of the differential.. not to check for an LSD. Alot of people get confused on this.

The only way to verify it is to do some driving or take the axles off and look through the differential. If you see right to the other side, it's an LSD. If you see a small bar in the middle, it's an open diff.

I'd do a real quick burnout to see if its a peg leg or not.if it leaves two treads you got lsd.One set of tread you got a peg leg.

Have fun

You'll have to do more than a quickie.. because it won't split power evenly untill you ride it for a few seconds.

hehe. also, when you launch, do you get torque steer (wheel turns on its own). You should get a good ammount w/o LSD and almost none with LSD. or u can just burnout in the rain or something and have your friends watch each tire.

Whats your point?

Go drive around a parking lot taking hard turns while accelerating.. then you'll understand what a gear type LSD is really for.

If you left two marks on the ground.. goodie. That doesn't mean anything.

even lsds have spyder gears. there will most likely be a shaft going through the diff.

one way to test is to just lift one drive wheel off and try to spin it. even on a gear type it will eventualy(after several turns) lock up/ be very hard to turn

Of course gear type LSD's have spider gears.

And there is no shaft going through them. Didn't I say that?

That's the LSD I broke on the other side.

I don't know about your method on checking for it because I have not tried that. I will bet that it would work though...
