how do i clean an O2 sensor?
mine is shot. my last engine seized after the oil plug came out with all the oil and the O2 sensor is probably filled with metal dust. i've read about using oven cleaner and then carb cleaner. is this the best way or only way?

just put it back in if it doesnt work replace it, or just replace it if you have the $. almost anything you put on it will ruin it.including coolant or any thing with silicone in it.

i replaced the motor but the O2 sensor is the same. the check engine light is alway on and the self diagnostic says its the O2 sensor.
are these real suggestions or are you guys just shouting out stuff:
sandpaper?
blowtorch?
are the bosch replacements that cheap?

Ok, I have been able to salvage **some** 4 wire sensors by heating the sensor tip with a bernz-0-matic torch. Take it up to temperature gradually by playing the flame over the sensor tip. It is less risky if you power the heater first for a minute or so before you put the flame to it. Then hold the sensor tip right where the inner blue flame ends for about 30 seconds to 1 minute rotating the sensor all the time. I find it helps to chant your favorite magical words at this time. It will impress your friends and firmly establish you as the lord of 02 sensors....pointy hat is optional.
They are thermal shock sensitive. You can fracture the Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Electrolyte with too fast a dT/dt.
Give it a try if the sensor is shot already you have nothing to loose. Carbon on the outside of the sensor tip means nothing. It is the damage done to the YSZ electrolyte and porous platinum electrodes inside that counts.
Some recover, most fail. I too use the Bosch Universal sensors and wire into the old harness connector.
Remember I am a detroit iron guy though.
