How can you tell the difference between a jdm engine and a usdm engine.
I am looking to buy a a jdm B16a engine for my honda civc cx. I want to know how do i tell the difference between the a jdm engine and a usdm engine. i have heard you can tell by the valve cover it is true and if so how do i tell
USDM valve covers have Honda Motor Company written at the botton, whereas JDM ones just have the
emblem. B18 series engines will only have the engine number stamped as B18C, and USDM engines are stamped B18C1/B18C5, theres possibly other ways but i cant think of them

also the series number (under the engine code) if it is 1million or 4million something then it is a JDM. 1millions = from JDm integra Xsi
4millions= from civic or crx sir's.
I thought the the JDM ITR motors were stamped b18c5?
why do u only want a JDM?
I would take what you can get. besides the USDM b16a's make more power than the JDM's.

Easiest way.... JDM has NO number after the block code(ie b16a, b18c)
No ifs ands or buts, NONE have numbers

And the JDM motors make more power then the US counterparts because compression on the motors are slightly higher.

also, distinguishing a motor by its valve cover is not always reliable...as a valve cover can be switched with relative ease. i've found the best way to tell a USDM motor from JDM motor is the stamping on the block...ie b18c vs b18c1 etc and the way the wiring harness is mounted on the motor. chances are, if the motor has b18c stamped on it and its wiring harness is setup for right hand drive then its from jdmland, or another country where they receive the same motors...etc.
plus, you can be sure you have a jdm motor when your rings are shot and it burns oil!

sgt my jdm b16 have a2 on it?
but it was from a right hand drive car?
could it be from another asian country ?ie hong kong?

Look for a vtec pressure switch too, jdm engines don't have that.
As for the valve cover stuff, the USDM B16 valve covers look like the JDM ITR valve covers, only different colors.
The JDM ITR valve covers do not look like USDM ITR valve covers.

are you sure your b16a2 wasn't from a civic si.
i'm willing to bet thats what you have.

It's not. There's a vtec pressure switch on it, and it says A2.
Sorry dude..
it's not a big deal though, usdm engines have alot of pros.

Where the hell do you see the b16a2??? It looks like b16a to me and all vtec motors have a vtec oil pressure switch!!!!!!
And NO, not all dohc vtec engines have pressure switches. Mine sure doesn't, and I wouldn't have a plug dangling off my usdm engine harness there if I did. My p28 wouldn't be throwing a code for it either.. and I might actually be able to engage in vtec if I had one. That leaves me to believe I don't have one. Can you prove me wrong?
I can see one on that engine, it's there.

Actually, the JDM ITR motors are B18C4's... C5 is the knock off USDM version (tuned down version)...

i see the 2 as well-- 99-00 civic si.
and as for JDM motors NEVER NO IFS AND OR BUTS about the trailing number, there is one exception:

Man please someone else jump in on this one but every dohc vtec motor Ive ever put in a car has had a vtec oil pressure switch and Ive put in hundreds!!!
