How To - 4-lug to 5-lug conversion
Does anyone know how hard it is to convert a 1999 Integra SE (I think its a GS in US Spec), 4 bolt, to a Integra Type R (ITR) 5 bolt pattern? Is it a simple as changing disks and calipers to an ITR-spec set up, and modifying the master cylinder and brake lines? Is it simpler than that? Or is it harder (i.e. would the struts and strut-mounts have to be changed too?
Eventually I plan to make my modest 1999 Integra SE into a full-blown ITR (or better if possible). Is it also practical to change to an ITR head on a B18B block? Will my block take the punishment the VTEC will throw at it?
Also, are there any cams out there that'll take the 7000 RPM redline to at least 8000 RPM? If so, the torque seems to drop off on the stock cam at about 6300 RPM, will a longer duration cam increase my power band? And what do you recommend to increase the low RPM power?
Here are some options I am considering:
- 0-5000 RPM - NOS (Wet or Dry?), 5000-8000 RPM Turbo (T3/T4 Hybrid, Spearco Intercooler)
- 0-5000 RPM Supercharge (Jackson Racing or the like), 5000-8000 RPM Turbo (same as above). The set up would be sequential with a bypass-valve from the Supercharger that will begin to engage at 3500-4000 RPM to spool the turbo.
- Full RPM range, T3/T4 Hybrid Turbo System (Turbonetics Engineered).
- B18C5 Engine Swap with Spoon Racing intake and exhaust tuning parts.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Looking for answers about the 4-bolt to 5-bolt swap first if anyone's ever done this, is it worth it? Or should I stick with 4-bolt and get Spoon or Comptech hardened wheel bolts?
Thanks,
Jay

Changing to a 5 lug is far more than just replacing the discs and calipers. You will have to buy a complete 5 lug swap which includes the knuckles, hubs, calipers, brackets, etc. A lot of sites sell the 5 lug conversion; everything you will need. The 5 lug conversion is also more than just more lugs to hold your wells on. It will imnprove your braking as well, but your 4 lug brakes are good too, you can just upgrade to better pads, rotors, brake lines, and brake fluid. If you want drastically better braking you should look into getting a Wilwood brakes kit.
As for your plans to make power, trubo and supercharger would be too much trouble and money and its just plain over-kill. A nice turbo set-up is all you need. If you got turbo, you wouldn't really have to play around with your valvetrain which would save money. A B18C1 with a turbo kit is a killer set-up as well so you may want to consider that as well.
You could also go with a B18C1 or B18C5 and stay all motor, There a lot more high performance parts than just spoon parts. Do your research on this. This is also a set place to add a nitrous kit. Dry kit are good up to a 60-70 shot. After that, I think a wet kit is a better choice because you would be putting a lot of stress on your fuel system.

I agree with the Spoon comment, about there being more high performance parts, but Spoons Reputation is awesome, and they know their stuff.
I watched Best Motoring Vol.1, the Spoon C.E.O. was cranking out facts I've never even heard of. Not to mention all of their parts are researched extensively, and 100% performance based.
i.e. They about going fast, not looking good.

spoon's products don't make you fast, they can make you quick, but 5lug ain't gonna do **** for you except make you look like an R you would notice little to no improvement, spoon 's products are more show than anything IMO
TODA has got it going on though
Spoon's header is sweet but $$$$$$$$$$$$

Nuff about Spoon, anyone else know how to change from 4 to 5 lugs so I can fit some OZ Superleggera III's, and all of the ITR big brake kits that there are out there.
P.S. Since I can't afford the insurance for an ITR, I figured I would build an ITR killer and screw the insurance companies as much as they tried to screw me for the ITR insurance.
