horrible problem w/ b18c1 and itr pistons, need problem solving
my buddy's b18c1 was put back together. and it has about 4k miles on it. set-up is
b18c1
usdm itr pistons stock 81mm bore
b18c1 PnP head milled .0015
skunk2 intake mani
aem CAI
skunk2 sticker underhood (+10 whp
)
stock fuel set-up, obd2 p72 ecu, fuel pressure at 55psi w/ unplugged vaccum hose.
motor was put together and after the rings seated we got 280-290 compression all 4 cylinders.
After about 1000 miles, it start detonating once vtec hit.
now the car is driving like complete *** whenever he mildly gets on it. (70% throttle) he'll get detonation.
3500 miles - checked the compression got 150 245 245 245
checked the compression the next day got 250 210 250 245
added oil to each cylinder got 275 225 280 275
what the hell is going on here...i don't thnk the compression can be much higher then 11:1, if even that. we retarded the ignition just to be on the safe side, and he's taking it easy until we can get the fuel upgrades in. what should our next step be? he's also burning about 1 quart every 10 days or so. 10w-30. any help or comments is greatly appreciated.
the plan is either prelude injectors or 310cc injectors and hondata, is a 255lph required or can we still run stock pump?
could the miled head be throwing timing that much off? plan was for cam gears, but we didn't think it would be a priority.

how did he break it in? Did you check stock fuel components like fuel filter and such? Maybe run some injector cleaner. It sounds like the motor is pretty bad if its burning that much oil.

break in was , 3 runs from 0-60, the car stopped smoking and drove like a beauty. 500 miles and the 2nd oil change ( we let it idle once the car started, for 15 minutes, then changed the oil then too). injector cleaner it is.....
maybe check to see if any of the aftermarket fuel components are loose, if anything, try putting the stock FPR vacum line back on..
Take the spark plugs out & inspect them. Should be a brownish to grey color on all of the plugs. And what spark plugs is yer buddy running ?

bosch platnium's, and all fuel is stock. the vaccum line was connected but was at 40+ psi. it would detonate worse.
what the hell do you have your ignition timing set at ? over 18 degrees advanced? if so....retard your timing some or put it to stock specs...that should squash some of your detonation/pinging issues..
I wonder if this is what wrong with mine. That almost sounds the same. bout a qt every 10 days. and ****. HMMM I wonder if timing is off that much. but same issue as above. would timing cause oil burn?

the distributor was completely retarded, the car ran to sluggish so we advanced it just a tad...the car still deonates, but not as bad.

Long time ago I had an Altima thats a Nissan and i had Bosch +4 plugs, I added injector cleaned and it destroyed the plugs, it detonated so bad I could her it eaven with the radio on, I coulden't go up hill on the freeway cuz it detonated to much, I was young and didn't know what it was the plugs were new so I took it to the dealership and they said that my plugs were not conducting ANYTHING and that I shouldn't buy that crap anymore. I payed 100 for the diagnostic check and 10 for the oem Nissan plugs, car was fixed, lesson learned. Get oem NGK's or maybe Denso Ir i had those too and they were good.
first off get those shitty bosch p. out of that motor and put some ngk's back in, then put your timing back to 16, and check all connections
Im a dumbass when it comes to this shh,
I GUESS PLEASE HELP THIS GUY HE NEEDS ALL THE INFO HE CAN GAIn
so i can learn too lol

sean, stop playing w/ your brother's computer
we're going to change plugs to ngk, and fix the timing, (crossing fingers) i hope this fixes it.

Get it on a dyno and keep an eye on the fuel pressure. Also, it's times like these where all those gauges people buy for looks actually become useful.
If your still burning oil after breakin, there's a chance that your rings didn't seat correctly.

it's a loud "ping" and i'm 99.9% sure it's detonation. we replaced the plugs, and the car is still detonating...the fuel pressure reg is on the way, what's the max psi, i can push it w/ stock fuel pump?

Ig nition is set correctly now, it was retarded to deal w/ the detonation, but we just put the fpr on, and bumped it up to 65psi, and added new platnium denso spark plugs. we're about to take it out, i just needed to find out what the max fuel pressure can be set at w/ stock pump before it fries...i think i heard 65psi somewhere...but wanted to make sure.

I do not care what kind of mood your in. Tell the truth about the break in. How you guys went out racing the night we put it in. Over reeving it and all. Thats NOT how you break in a motor..
OHH by the way, whos car is on the road running perfectly, slow but running perfect, and whos isnt?

Dam,sounds like this has to be a timing problem. That set-up shouldnt detonate that bad. How are you checking your timing???
set back your fuel pressure to 38 psi with vacumm connected. get rid of the obd2 gsr ecu and find either a obd1 p72 or a p28. get a base program chipped for either (preferably the p28) get a vtec controller or preferably a hondata s200. since you're running single intake runners you should use a p28. remove whatever spark plugs you have and throw in some bosch # 4227 no need to gap. they are 2 bucks a piece and last really long. do your basic tune up. adjust valve clearance. set base timing to 15 degrees. run at least 91 octane *nor cal sucks* highest grade you can find locally is 91.
go get it on a dyno. should run strong. make sure when you're doing a compression test, the engine is at normal operating temp and you remove the 15A ecu fuse from the fuse box underneath the hood. also disconnect your igntion harness ( the two that are on the distributor.
