Default horizontal shock/spring mounting: someone help me understand..

ive seen many race cars including JGTC mount the spring and shock setup horizontally. how exactly does this system work and what are the benefits besides more fender room? thanks in advance

The rod from the bottom of the knuckle goes to a triangular piece that pivots. It pushes on one corner, moving the other along an axis defined by the shock mount.

The advantages include lower unsprung weight, less drag from pieces hanging outside the car, and easier replacement of shocks and springs.

Thats a Formula SAE car for anyone wondering.
