High throttle studders...
This has never been an issue before, but in the last 4 months give or take, i've had some problems with the car studdering bad at high throttle angles (not necessarly WOT either). The block and head are fine, the A/F is dead on, the car runs flawless at part throttle and under normal accerleration but when i really open it up it starts to spudder some and its rather annoying...
The few things that I suspect could be at fault are:
A faulty Hondata box or wire jumper between it and the ECU? (its worked great for 2 years however)
MSD ignition box and/or coil failure? (perhaps 30k miles is too many for an old style non-digital MSD?)
Distrubitor problem? (Ignitor perhaps? It still does this with a brand new cap & rotor so thats not the problem, also plug wires are in good shape as well.)
Faulty or dirty crank angle sensor? (I'm sure its got some oil on it, but that doesnt seem like something that would fail that easily.)
Any other suggestions? Cam & ignition timing are unchanged from periods that it ran great at WOT. Fuel has been tweaked but only to suffice for larger injectors that were swapped in this past year. Strangely, the studder problem doesnt always happen, and it doesnt matter if the car is warm or cold or if the air temp is hot or cold outside... Another odd thing is the tach jumps around violently when it starts to studder like this which makes me think its a sensor or the Hondata somehow. Datalogs dont show any "jumpy" RPM's which is even stranger, however it does sometimes show fuel duty cycles that are way higher than programmed that jump from normal to as much as +30% and back which also points me to a faulty sensor or the Hondata somehow.
My setup is:
Hondata 3B w/datalogging
B16 built block
B16 Endyn head
Vortech supercharger w/ ~15psi @ 8600rpm
MSD 6BTM ignition w/ HVCA ignition coil (the BTM part is not connected to anything since i've had the Hondata)
Your typical doo-dads and gauges....
Several other people i've talked to have had similar problems but I dont know how they solved it.
Another thing to note is, the A/F gets slightly jumpy towards extra rich when the studdering occurs... Again pointing me towards something odd going on in the Hondata.

My guess would be that your ignitor is giving up! I've gone through 5 of them so far between my B16 and B20 CRVTEC swaps. B-series usually tend to have the most problems with thier ignitors, I really haven't found out why though. Maybe due to the constant high temps and revs the engine must sustain. Not sure, but everytime I've had the same symptoms, it's been a faulty ignitor. I'd definately check that!!! HTH

Thats one of the things that came to mind as well... But damned if i'm going to buy a brand new ignitor for $180ish to find out that wasnt the problem. /sigh A few people suggested the coil may be failing which wouldnt suprise me considering how many miles it has and how much abuse its taken during that time.

Good news, I just got finished swapping the ignitor out and sure enough it made a night and day difference... In fact, its so strong now I believe it is FASTER than it was prior to the ignitor starting to fail. Go figure!
