Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (34 pix)
Well I had a mishap with my newly installed clutch. The splines on the clutch disc completely stripped out and took a little of the splines off the mainshaft in my tranny. Not cool. I did not want to install the new disc with the manishaft partially stripped so I bought a new mainshaft from Acura, $230. I figured that while I was in the tranny I would do a little how-to. A lot of people are afraid to go inside a tranny for fear all the parts inside, I guess. This is my attempt at show-and-tell. Btw, this is on a ‘92 GSR YS1 cable transmission.
First thing first, disconnect the battery and put Nikki in the house https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif Here are the tools that I used. http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...888%3B49ot1lsi A shot of the patient and its new inard part http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...888%3B48ot1lsi The first thing that I did was remove the clutch lever and release bearing by removing this bolt right herrr http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...888%3B46ot1lsi then I removed the back up light switch http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...888%3B44ot1lsi remove clutch cable bracket http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...888%3B43ot1lsi then remove a few other misc bolts around the case http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...8%3B3%3Aot1lsi http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...888%3B39ot1lsi then this sealing bolt http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...888%3B37ot1lsi which reveals the dreaded snap ring http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...888%3B36ot1lsi lastly remove all the bolts that hold the transmission housing to the clutch housing http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...888%3B33ot1lsi http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...3A%3C%3Aot1lsi this is a good point for a drink of water http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...8%3A%3C7ot1lsi ok, now crack the two halfs apart http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...8%3A%3C5ot1lsi using the reverse snap ring tool (a must) spread the snap ring and the countershaft should clunk as it drops off the snap ring http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...8%3A%3C3ot1lsi closer look http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...8864%3C2ot1lsi and pull the trans housing up, you may have to wiggle it a little, and there you have it…the inards are exposed http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...8864%3B7ot1lsi then start removing the pieces around the counter and mainshafts, first the reverse changer holder http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...8864%3B6ot1lsi then the reverse idler gear http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...8864%3B2ot1lsi then the shift piece/shift arm holder/select arm……stuff http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...8864%3A9ot1lsi http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...8864%3A6ot1lsi now remove the countershaft w/ gears and synchros, mainshaft w/ gears and synchros and shifter forks all at once http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...8864%3A3ot1lsi http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...88649%3Bot1lsi and there sits the whole clump http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...55886498ot1lsi another good point for a drink of water http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...55886495ot1lsi here is the new and old mainshafts together. Also I have removed all the gears and synchros off the old shaft and have placed them upside down, in order, off to the side http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...55886488ot1lsi here is the old mainshaft, you can see the shininess, that is where is has a little wear from the clutch disc strpping out http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...88647%3Bot1lsi now, grease the new mainshaft up with assembly lube and start putting the gears and synchros on http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...46795565nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...46795559nu0mrj here is the final assembled mainshaft http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...46795555nu0mrj clean the hondabond off, wipe some old grease off, and lube up the sockets where the counter and mainshafts and shifter fork go into the tranny http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...46795549nu0mrj now put in the countershaft w/ gears and synchros, mainshaft w/ gears and synchros and shifter forks all at once http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...46795543nu0mrj here is the tranny with all the inards in and lubed up ready for the tranny case to go back on http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...55886449ot1lsi http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...55886443ot1lsi now, if you get something out of order the helms manual, which I know you bought before you attempted this, has a nice exploded view with descriptions for everything inside and out of the tranny http://images.snapfish.com/3388%3A73...55886439ot1lsi Just put it back together in reverse order and don’t forget Hondabond and to torque all the bolts down correctly. If something is hard to put back together, then that probably means something is not right so double check. I hope now that you realize that working on the transmission is not all that bad. I may have forgot something so take your time. Overall, it took me about an hour, and I was farting around. Level of difficulty would be about 2.5 on a scale of 10, at least I think so. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif |
good job. I like the portion when you had a drink of water. we did one of these last week and it took us about an hour with afew drinks from the hostess.

Snap ring pliars are not needed. Needle nose pliars will get the job done.
That white grease is not needed, MTF is. Usually when I see a mainshaft torn up like that there are usually syncros getting on the loose side and/or bent shift forks. |
Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (Jeff C)
Excellent job.
Good clear pics! Ive got a question or two if you don't mind. 1 - Think you can point out for me the bearings that give the dreadful "whine" on my old '91 Si tranny? (I want to attempt the rebuild, but don't want the tranny sitting apart while I wait on the bearings. I want the parts on hand so I can get it back together the same day so I don't forget how things go. Letting it sit on a bench for a few days can only lead to possible problems) 2 - And I assume those bearings on the shafts slip off, no press needed? 3 - And the bearings that remain in the case, are they easily replaceable, or a press is necessary? |

Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (Chiovnidca)
PhatOptimo, you can use your pliers and drink your https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/embeer.gif, but i wouldn't trade these snap ring pliers for anything. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif
Chiovnidca, about 75% of the gears and synchros in there were replace 25k mi ago. There is no play. The problem was the splines on the outside end got a little beat up. The inside are ok. 7PSI CRX, I personally am not familiar with the whining that you are talking about so I cant help you there. Correct, you do not need a press. However, there is a nut on the end of the countershaft, like the axle nut, that is a little PITA. The bearing in the case can easily be tapped out with a mallet. tinkerbell, yes it easy to replace the synchros. you just need to make sure that you get them back in the correct place cause they are not all exactly the same. Mista, I am glad you told me about those things awhile back. They are awesome!! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif Thanks for the props. I hope that it helps somebody. Now I have to go install the tranny back into the car. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif |

Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (slashDEVslashNULL)
ok, not as hard as its cracked up to be...
is putting in a LS 5th gear just as easy? |
Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (SilverCIVIC96)
I am not sure what all is involved in putting a different gear in, ie having to use a different synchro too, but replacing gears is yes, just as easy.
|
Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (SilverCIVIC96)
once you get the gear shafts out, swapping fifth gear only takes about 5-10 minutes. Getting to 30mm nut off is the hardest part.

Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (Mista Bone)
Mista, thanks for the input. I know how to replace a stock gear with a stock gear, but i was not for sure what would be involved in replacing a stock gear from one tranny with a stock gear from another. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif
slashDEVslashNULL, i have done a couple to those too. You would take the tranny apart the same way (obviously) and remove the gear sets the same way (obviously). The diff just pulls right out. The biggest PITA about a Quaiffe install is getting the correct shim. How I did it was put the put the Quaiffe in, reassemble the whole tranny and check for shim clearences just like the manual said. If it was good, then remove the case and apply the HOndabond. If it is not, keep trying different shims till you find the correct one with the proper clearences. PhatOptimo, yes its a teg tranny, YS1. And yes the tool comes in very handy. Thanks for adding the pics too. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif |
Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (Jeff C)
good write up! I agree that Trannies aren't anything hard to work on.. just gotta remeber where shit goes!
|
Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (Jeff C)
those winey gears could be on either side of the diff - mine were, but you will need a puller to get them off. the whine could also be the bearing on the shaft or the ones pressed into the casing. the ones in the casing you can just pop out too.

Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (Burke)
Jeff;
That's a great write-up!! I totally agree with the "water" aspect of it! (no preaching, just a little fun) Maybe I'm in the wrong generation, but what's a "Nikki"? About that snap ring; Can the snap ring be removed / or installed through the access hole? The access hole doesn't look large enough to get it in and out. You made a comment that you will hear a "clunk" when the countershaft falls free. Am I correct that this is due to already having the cases spread apart? If you just pulled the cases apart, I'm assuming that the gears would fall all over the place as they came off the counter shaft. When putting it back together, do you have to worry about the countershaft being in the correct position to get the snap ring on? Does the snap ring just flop around free, after bolting the transmission halfs together and before it's snapped into place? Thanks!! Wes Vann |
Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (Wes V)
I also have the same question as listed above...
In addition to that, I'm also wondering about the 'whine' that my '90 Si (CRX) tranny makes. Someone said that it could be the bearings in the differential??? And you need a puller to get to those? What's a puller? |

Does the snap ring just flop around free, after bolting the transmission halfs together and before it's snapped into place? </TD></TR></TABLE> #1 the snap ring stays inside the top half of the tranny case. You should not have to remove it. It does not fall out. You just spread it apart to remove the top half of the tranny case. #2 The case will seperate a little bit and the snap ring will still be in place. When you spread the ring open and pull the top half of the case off it will "clunk" and the top half of the case will come off. The ring holds them together (kind of). As far as the gears they are held onto the shaft with a nut. The gears do not fall of the shaft. You have to literally pull them off after removing that nut. The mainshaft is a bit different. 3# When the gearset is placed back in the clutch housing then the top half of the case that holds the snapring is ready to be installed (considering you've installed everything else). To get the snap ring back in its place there is a proven method to use. Spread the snapring open and get it around the mainshaft bearing. While its open around the bearing you turn the tranny over and give it a few drop taps on a piece of wood. This will set the snap ring in its proper position. Then you torque the case bolts. Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (Wes V)
Thanks Wes. Yea the water was just for fun. Lol, the Nikki I am referring to is my friends dog. Everytime we start to work on the cars, we jokingly start naming off stuff to do before we start, i.e. disconnecting the battery, removing the spare tire, rolling the passenger side window down and putting Nikki in the house. Just stupid stuff we come up with. Its just an inside joke. You are not in the wrong generation. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif
You are correct about not being able to take the snap ring out throught that little hole. It sits in a grove in the transmission housing and can only be removed and installed from the inside of the transmission housing. Its a tricky booger to get out too. Yes the "clunk" would be the countershaft dropping loose from the snap ring. Thats the only thing holding the tranny together after you remove all the bolts. No, the gears and synchros will not just fall off the countershaft. There is a nut, similar to an axle nut, that is on the end of the counter shaft. The way that I show removing the two haves, with the clutch housing facing down, there is nothing that will fall out. When putting it back together, everything kind of falls into place. You will have to wiggle the tranny housing a little in order for everything to fall into its postion. When eveything is in position, the two halves will be about 1/2" apart. You can look throught that snap ring hole and see that the countershaft is resting against the snap ring. This is when you use the pliers to open up the snap ring and wiggle the housing till it settles against the other half. Then bolt the two halves together with 2 bolts, just snug them up, and turn the tranny over so that the snap ring will settle into the groove on the countershaft. Here again you will hear a "clunk" when it has reached its final destination. Hope that helps. Jeff https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif |
Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (Jeff C)
Jeff, the 5th gear swap "should" have the shims checked, but I've never needed to change anything.
Also if you are installing a aftermarket LSD with new bearings, measure the current setup vs. the new setup to see if there is any major difference. This can only be done with the ring gear removed. The picture give you a general idea..... http://www.codyscafe.com/~mrbone/pic...ny/diffOAL.JPG Measure from the outer races of the bearings. When I installed my Kaaz LSD, the difference was .001", I didn't bother reshimming. http://www.codyscafe.com/~mrbone/pic...S/P5020015.JPG Sexy ain't it? |

Very well done, man. Just wondering if you know what is different in this process for a hydro tranny. And would, say, a '00 JDM CTR LSD need shimming in a 99-00 si tranny. What do these shims look like anyway? Once again, very informative - very useful info https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif
|
Re: Here's a little tranny how-to for j00!! (Wilky)
The process would be almost identical. I have worked on a couple of hydro trans too, just as easy. I am not sure the shims that required cause each one could be different. Just put the LSD in your tranny first with the oem shim and mearure the clearances and see whether they are in spec. If not, determine whether you need a fatter or thinner shim an get one or two of either the next fatter or thinner of the oem shim. Make sense? Perhaps somebody else can explain better. The shims are like $6ea so dont get too happy buying them. The shims are just big washers bacially.

It is good to see there are actually some guys in the area that know a little bit about Hondas. Do you know of any Hondata tuners anywhere close to us. I am thinking of purchasing one? Titans fan?
