Default Help! Wiring Continuity VSS/Speedometer/Odometer

Hi all,

I've searched for hours on the web trying to find out what the heck is going on with my speedometer and odometer. They are both malfunctioning - occasionally it'll work or bounce around like a kid on caffeine.

I originally thought it was my VSS that was defective, but I just had that replaced and it's not the problem. Thanks to honda-tech.com I managed to find several links and FAQ's about electrical.

So this is what I determined when I used my circuit continuity tester:

- the VSS connector has 3 wires, the blue/wht wire does not light up the tester
- the blue/wht wires that feed both speedometer and odometer at the cluster does not light the tester
- the blue/wht wire that detects the VSS at ECU DOES light up

Can anyone please help me pinpoint where I may find the loose or defective wiring? Is there a fuse box I can check? I tried following the blue/wht wire from the VSS connect but it branched into a bigger harness and goes into the abyss. Is it possible to follow that line all the way to the cluster?

ANY INPUT WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

check the vss plug its self for green corrosion*.make shur the pins are not a black color or green color (no good),if they are find a new one that is'nt corroded*.Cut the wires back and soldier in new one.when the pins are corroded* like that the wire is most likely corroded* too.If this checks out to be ok you might wanna try swaping out gauge cluster for known good one.

Thanks for the tip.

I will try to find a newer connector. In the meantime, please keep the ideas coming, people. Thanks.

My speedo worked before i pulled my motor

dropped the motor back in = speedo doesnt work

solution:

spray degreaser (i used greased lightning, you can use simple green) to get the corrosion out. i tried a bunch of diff stuff...i let it soak...kept spraying it in there until i thought i got most of it.

then i took brake kleen and kept spraying that in there so the connector wouldn't become sticky from the degreaser. after it dries up i plugged it back in...and it worked..

(prior to this i had also tried a different VSS and no luck)

If the odometer and speedometer both go nuts at times chances are your cluster is going south.

So I just checked my VSS connector and it looks immaculate, considering how old the car is. The connectors are still bright silver with no signs of corrosion.
I need to find someone that will lend me a cluster to check out. I'm not in the position to buy another and find out that it's not the problem.

I really appreciate the feedback guys.

Check all your grounds first, especially the one by the thermostat...

Where is the thermostat located? If that was faulty, wouldn't that affect other electrical components?

Hey guys, I fixed the problem. I found someone that was selling a cluster that was only 1K (km) more than mine. The problem is fixed!
I can't believe that was all it took.

Thanks for all your help. Now I have an extra VSS - anyone need one? =D
