Is thermostat OEM or aftermarket?
New Thermostat means you've cracked open the cooling system, the other thing to do is rebleed the system of air. You probably still have an air pocket in there.
If not OEM thermostat, go buy one from Honda as aftermarket thermostats are notorious for causing problems. Thermostat is one thing you always do OEM.

96 doesn't have the bleeder screw of the 5th gen (92-95) so you normally lift the front end a little or park with the nose pointed up on an incline. Unscrew cap to loosest setting that doesn't actually come off. Top up reservoir (probably easier to do before you raise the front end or park on an incline), then start her up and wait until the fan kicks on at least twice.
Usually this is done from a cold engine so can take over 20 minutes.
I personally wait until the fan kicks on 3 times.
After that, turn the car off, remove cap and top up radiator. Put cap on and close totally. Next morning/day top up reservoir and you should be good.
