Help please gears grinding?
For the last month my gears have been making a grinding sound when i down shift into 2nd or 3rd most of the time. I called honda and made a app to see them next week but im wondering if they will say it not under warrenty since I have a short shifter in. Will I need to take it out and put the old one in? Also what could be the prolem? Thanks
ur problem could be the syncros, my third in my other motor had a problem shifting, and a friend of mine his gears grind when he shifts. i think there usually about 30 bucks each, but they have to take ur tranny out.
change to mobil 1 or redline in your tranny.
it'll smooth almost anything out.
also i here lots of people talkin about using honda mtf (manual trans. fluid) however i never have nor do i know that you can. but...
like i said if you swap out the tranny oil for some good synthetic it'll help out a lot. if it doesn't go away entirely try changing it again in 2-3000 miles. even if it doesn't fix it it's cheap enough to be worth trying.

the first thing you should do is switch to honda mtf. we just went through this on this https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=338587 thread, but i'll reiterate.
synchros need friction to work, if you put some magic oil in your tranny that made everything frictionless, all your synchros would immediately stop working. the friction modifiers in honda mtf are there to assure that the synchros have the exact right amount of friction needed to do their job the best. no more friction, no less. this is my normal oil doesn't work as well. all the honda mtf users can't be wrong. before you take it in you owe it to yourself to try switching your tranny fluid to honda mtf.

Actually 10W30 is right (if you were thinking they were wrong). Thats what i put in mine when i was griding 1st to second when racing. Now it doesnt grind at all... Ha, i kno what you're thinking tho, when the Autozone guy told me 10W30 motor oil i was about to choke him

incorrect.
it's not your synchros grinding, it's the synchro hub grinding the dog teeth of the gear itself. the synchro ring's (this is what people refere to when they say synchro) job is to match the speed between the gear and the synchro hub. if there is no friction or too little friction then the synchro ring is unable to match speeds, and you end up trying to mesh two sets of teeth together turning at different speeds, therefore you'd grind all the time.
for your tranny to work correctly without grinding you need exactly the right amount of friction. to much or too little and you'll start having problems.

the thing is, if there's no friction, than the synchro ring and the gear will never spin at the same speed, and once you push the synchro hub past the spring ring on the synchro ring, it'll hit the dog teeth on the gear and grind.
as you push the shifter into gear, the synchro hub will still try to engage the dog teeth on the gear whether they're spinning at the same speed or not.

Short shifters do not cause grinding. Poor/abusive shifting does.
If your car is still under warranty though, I'd go back to the stock shifter just to make things easier for yourself.
And like what most have stated, use Honda MTF and Honda MTF only.
