Default Help me clear up my coilover issue please.

I bought a set of AVO coilovers with H&R springs from a local shop about 8 months ago. They are full threaded, height and ride adjustable coilovers...

I was at a different shop a few days ago and removed all four coilovers to try and figure out why they where squeking so much. When I got the first out and removed the spring, I showed it to my buddy (shop owner) and he said "your coilovers are dead". I was like WHAT?? these are basically brand new!! He showed me that when the metal shaft is compressed down into the coilover, that it is supposed to rebound up where as mine stays down. He also showed me on a stock shock how the metal shaft smoothly raised after being compressed.

I removed all the other four coilovers and all of them are the same. The metal shaft once compressed down, does not rebound up again...it stays down unless pulled up with force.

I phoned the shop I bought them from and they said that all coilovers are supposed to be like that. They said that the shaft is supposed to stay down when pushed and that it only comes up with the help of the coilover spring (the H&R's).

Sorry for the long post, but is the shaft supposed to stay down or raise up.

From what i know, it should bounce back up. If a shock is compressed and doesn't rebound, that means yous shocks are dead.

There are many different designs of shocks and struts. The word "Coilover" refers the fact that the coil spring is wrapped around the shock or strut.

Most shocks and struts are gas pressurized to eliminate the oil from foaming and to keep the damping more constant. If your shocks are gas pressurized and in good condition, the damper rod should extend after you compress and release it. If the AVOs are not a gas pressurized unit, the shaft will not extend.

Hope this helps.
