Help, I keep breaking the IM!
So I replaced the HG> no problem. But while bolting up the IM, A small chunk by the #4 runner always breaks off, its right next to the coolant passage. If I did get a new manifold, Im worried that Id break it in the same place! There is that gay black thing that goes down behind the IM, Im thinking that has something to do with it... BTW this is on a 93 Civic, stock D15B7. Any help would be great.

Theres a special way to tighten it down...I believe it starting from the outside then going in grdaually tightening it...Check out a Helms or any manual...It should tell you the proper pattern of tightening the IM and EM....
the torque specs are like 17 ft/lbs... which is close to nothing... so you're probobly just over torquing the bolts...
What order are you tightening things down...
I'd get the brace on but not tight and slowly tighten the IM bolts from the middle out like on a head or header... then I'd tighten down the brace..
Again these are VERY low torque numbers... it's only enough to crush the gasket and keep it on there.

Thats the thing, I go from the middle out.... the middle ones are snug... Then I go to tighten up the end one and SNAP. Im hardly putting any pressure on it, definetly under 17lbs, thats for sure.

Make sure the mating surface is clean and free of any debris. Also make sure the gasket is in good condition.
If there is anything between the head and IM around the #4 runner when you tighten the last bolt it will cause it to crack.
I have seen this happen before.
Try checking this and see what you find.

Like stated above... DO NOT fully torque down any of the bolts while others are loose... (except the mounting brackey/brace) that you should tighten last... try from the outside in.. and you may want to check the head's mating surface and the intake's mating surface with a straight edge just to be sure nothing is warped...
then again like stated be sure nothing is obstructing the im from seating properly... be it on the mating surface or elsewhere... make sure you can hold it on FLUSH without anything getting in the way.
good luck.
