Default Help, Bad sound from engine bay

My car makes a weird whirring sound, similar to the sound your car makes while accellerating in reverse, and its coming from my engine bay. It makes this noise while idling, as well as ANY time the rpms go up, whether in neutral or any gear, and the higher the rpm, the louder, as well as the higher pitched the noise is. Ive tried listening for where the sound is coming from under the engine bay, pushing the throttle in and listening for it, but i cant find out. It seems like the noise is coming from the drivers side though, but thats all i can distinguish. Any help in finding out what this may be would be greatly appreciated! thanks

its a stock 97 itr motor with appx. 37k

Sounds like it may be a waterpump, alternator, or power steering issue... perhaps even a belt for one of these is rubbing something it shouldnt be. Although its hard to diagnose without being there, you can try to see where its coming from by doing certain things one at a time such as disconnecting the power steering belt and/or alt. belt to see if the sound goes away... if that isnt it, see if its coming from the waterpump area... and so on. Good luck!

buy one of these.
Good investment. Doesn't have to be this one just something like this.

it ended up being the idler pulley, which caused the a/c belt to snap, thanks for the input though!
