Default Heli Coil... good idea? block stripped

i did a search and all the topics on heli coils were about a year old and i wanted to bring the topic back up. well i just purchased an ls vtec and the previous owner had stripped the threads on the block so when i took the studs off they werent tight at all my heads at the machine shop for resurfacing and honing i just sprayed my gasket copper and im going to lightly sand down the blocks edges but the only problem is when i put these all back together how is it going to hold? so i've heard of this thing called Heli coil. can anybody relate to my problem? was it a PITA? any heads up? im hoping to pick up a kit today and try and get it done today if not tomorrow.

heres the link i found its pretty helpful if you dont know what it is. it'll give you a hint https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=339854

Very true with heli coils its like a one time thing. Either you get it or u r messed up. I recently went through this same experience with my LS block. I opted to pull the block and took it to a local machine shop to have helicoils installed (4 to be exact). Its been about 3 or 4 months and they are still holding strong. Ive put 20 plus psi on my block since the helicoils and they are still strong. Like I said earlier take it to a machine shop and have them do it. Good luck man.

Do you think the block stripped because they used the LS head bolts instead of GSR head bolts which are longer? If so, maybe you could use the GSR head bolts and be okay. If not maybe an ARP stud kit would solve the problem if the head bolt hole is not stripped out all the way to the bottom. If the bolt hole is stripped all the way to the bottom be aware that you can special order Heli-coil kits in different lenghts so get the longest (deepest) kit possible. I have tried "stacking" the standard heli-coils without much luck and the long heli-coils worked good.

do not use the heli-coil kits you can buy from kragen they are not meant for that type of torque. you should get time certs, a lot like heli-coil, but 100 times stronger. use heli-coil if you just want it to rip out and then you really mess up the block beyond repair.

You should be able to do the repair with the motor in the car. You will have to remove the head. I would thind the cost would be the same as replacing a head gasket plus an hour or two do do the additional work.
