It is nothing more then a support for your seats and your speakers YOU CAN always put a strut bar there to reinforce that area!
As for can you remove YES you can cut it YES YOU CAN it is only thin metal that could not support anything other then some rear seat and speakers nothing to do with the integrity of the car!

Actually that flimsy looking thin metal piece does increase rigidity somewhat. I know in a tube chassis its a different story, because the tubing is the frame and the shell doesnt really support much of the load.

How can it increase anything when it is wafer thin?
Put a strut bar there if your so worried about it hell i know hard core people on the street who have tined there whole rear of the car and still drives fine with out any problems or rigidity
Truth is uni-body cars flex period! How do you account for hatch back cars?
Oh and to add the frame on the rear of the car the part were the window is is what helps “brace the car” not the parcel shelf which is held in by nuts and bolts
