Default H22 tranny

My buddy has a 93 hatch w/ a 92-96 H22 setup. Not long after the swap the 5th/reverse syncro went out. Now it scrapes 5th and will not go into reverse. Unfortunately another 92-96 tranny is hard to find so will a 97-01 tranny bolt up to the 92-96 block? Thanks for the help.

There is no synchro on reverse, so I can't imagine why he can't get into that gear. And the 5th gear syncrhos are known to be weak, but only redline 3rd-5th shifts will really damage them (and you have to do that often). And yes, the 97-up trannies bolt right up, just don't try using an SH tranny.

sounds like the clutch is done. take it off and inspect the clutch closely. thats usually an indication. 90% of the time people think there tranny is out its usually the clutch. just try it. good luck.

i thought the problem was due to a bent shift fork, not synchos? Either way, theres a TSB on it and its solution is to tear it apart and replace the 5th gear, synchos and shift fork.

SH tranny wont work because the lude SH has ATTS. Use a base tranny.

Dude the same thing happened to my first tranny. I grinded it pretty hard one time going into 3rd. When i tried to shift into 5th it would grind pretty hard. I parked the car and turned it off. When i got back into my car and tried to back out of the parking spot the tranny wouldn't go in reverse. I had it looked at and it turned out my reverse shift fork was bent and the pin that holds reverse and 5th shift fork popped out. I heard this was a very common thing with h22 trannies.

keep in mind 5thgen tranny (97 up.) is geared slightly higher, and will reduce acceleration

You will top out @150 though, stead of 136..
