Default guess my motor problem.

stock civic vx motor, D15Z1 with 176K miles.

Cyl. #3 is not firing.. I can pull that plug wire with the motor running and nothing happens. (it runs rough to begin with). Any other plug wire pulled will kill the motor.

I made sure the #3 injector was clicking, and I swapped injectors with another cylinder to no avail. The plug wire arcs to the valve cover when pulled.

Compression results are:
(engine warm, WOT)
185, 180, 125, 175... 1,2,3,4 respectively.

after a cap of oil in each cylinder:
225, 210, 165, 200

I dont have a leakdown gauge set, but I pressurized each cylinder, and the results were:

Cyl.1: Blows air through the oil passages.. filler hole and dipstick hole
Cyl2: Tight. yay.
Cyl3: Blows air through spark plug holes and exhaust
Cyl4: Blows air through spark plug holes. (if those are plugged, slight air can be heard through the intake.

Any diagnosis? I have a topic going about this in the civic forum, but I wanted to present it to the techies of the board and see what the consensus is. I just want a reliable stock motor for daily driving. I am trying to get an idea if the head needs work, bottom needs work, or if I should just swap an entire motor and start fresh.

Well, that's a lot of **** going on, but a fresh valve job would solve the problem of air going out through the closed intake/exhaust ports. That would be my first step.

But, with a motor that old, I'd junk it. It basically needs a complete rebuild with that kind of mileage. I bet your valve seals, valve guides, and piston rings are all toast. I don't know how I'd justify spending any kind of money fixing up a 175k mile Z1 motor. Ick.

I know what you mean, and its definitely an option....

But if everyone agrees the head needs the most attention, I may just have it rebuilt and be done with it until it totally dies.

other guesses?

Even with low compression, that cylinder should still fire. ...
