Are these things for real? How can they determine hp/tq from the cigarette adapter? They calim to post a whole shitload of info on your car but im trying to see how accurate you guys would say it is? The first looks better than the second just cause of the screen n all but what do you guys think? 50 bucks for unlimited dyno(or a good estimate)?
Thanks
Dan

I would not by it for a dyno. First off its not that accurate at it, and second it doesn't give a graph just peak numbers (well at least the old model did, not sure about any newer ones).
The acceleration part of it is plain physics (acceleration or G's x time = distance) and if set up correctly on level ground it is actually pretty darn accurate. My friends and I use to play around with one and compared to track times it was VERY close, usually within a .1-.2. The other thing is that it displays the actual final trap speed which will be a tad higher than what you would see at the track (track takes an average of the last 60ft or so).
However in the end the one we played with started messing up. It had me running high 13's (about right) but was showing my trap speed to be around 115mph
.
In the end its a fun little toy to mess around with if you have some nice open country roads.

Being that there are so many more variables to consider when using one as a dyno, getting the same result twice is rather difficult. When the vehicle is moving, you have increased rolling resistance, increased wind resistance, air temp, road temp, heat soak, and any number of other factors to consider. However using these numbers can give you a more accurate method of determining what your car puts to the ground in the real world rather than on a dyno when many of the variables are controlled and not representative of what you will encounter in the real world.
I have used one of those. It is actually really fun, and very accurate. The one that I used had you enter the weight of your car, and then you do a 1/4 mile run. Then you enter a number that the computer will give you and do another run, and it will tell you your horsepower.
Mine was very accurate, telling me that I have 127 peak HP, which is exactly what they claim for stock (which my car is) with a best run of 16.37 (slow) at like 84mph. I think the only reason that I thougt that it was worth it was that it was not mine, so I didn't have to blow the 200 bucks. But if you have the cash, go for it.
