GSR diff. backlash
the differential gear can tend to get worn but if you have a knock noise i would put the blame on your input shaft splines being worn like these are....especially if you have a performance clutch and you like to "dump the clutch"
pics will be up momentarily.........

the picture does not show it very well but the splines are supposed to have a shape like this /^\ and they are worn to a shape like this /\ if that helps any
with the splines like that it gives the clutch the freedom (which will most likely have the same wear) to rotate back and forth a few degrees and will have a "clunk" sound

How bad is it to drive with an input shaft like this. If this is my problem that is. BTW do they sell friction plates with splines like this /\ or are they all like this /^\?
I checked it out again today and the engine shakes like mad when I release the clutch normally. The car doesn't really jerk forward or backwards too much. Most of the foce is absorbed by the engine mounts. If I release it slowly it doesn't do it.

I am now 99% sure what the source of the problem is. I jacked up my car the other day, to check the free play in the wheels when the car was in gear. The only place where I noticed that there was a lot of play was the right side inner CV joint. It also made a metalic noise. I'm guessing it most likely must be that. I didn't hear any play coming from the clutch housing or the differential. The only place the noise is coming from is the CV axle.
I'll change it when I get my engine rebuilt and I'll let you know if I was right.

if in fact your input shaft splines are worn you will have to buy a new friction plate/clutch and you wil need to get a new input shaft and have it installed if you are not capable of the install yourself

Yeah I know, but I noticed that all of the play that I have is due to the inner right side CV joint. So hopefully, that's all that I need to change.
